My MSI R9290 Hawaii was running fine all year long. Mind you, I don't play games on daily basis, so I don't abuse the card at all. Maybe once or twice a month. Today, my PC shut off by itself, and when i turned it back on, a "Your GPU temp is really high" notification popped up. I installed MSI afterburner, and the temp was 94 while the fan speed was at 100%. I lowered the clock speeds to the min 485MHz core clock and 625MHz Memory clock. Now its running on 85 degrees with 100% fan speed. Any suggestions, or should I throw it in the garbage and go for any NVIDIA 10xx card?

If thoroughly cleaning the card doesn't help, it is a fairly straightforward procedure to replace the thermal paste on GPU as well.

How old is the card? Is it super dirty? Do you know what kind of temps it was running at previously?
