After playing xcom 2 (a game) for 3-4 hours straight I went to the bathroom and heard a very loud noise from the pc room, the sound suggested keyboard or chair fell but when I arrived in the room my pc had turned off and there was a burn smell in the air. I could not figure out where the smell was comming from as it dissipated quickly. After reinstalling the cpu cooler and replugging all cables I turned on the pc and it got an error message: Overclocking failed: Press F1 to enter SETUP. I neved did any overclocking on my cpu and never changed anything in BIOS other than boot priority. After that message i restarted the pc and it worked fine for 8 hours that i spent updating all drivers and searching something similar to this problem.

During the night i woke up with the pc making some noises while turned off, the noise was as if some switches were turning on and off very slowly. I need help, tomorrow I need to work with this pc. BIOS detected every hardware correctly. I changed windows 10 version two days ago from pro to home and since it kept some files i thought all drivers were update but they were not so I updated them yesterday after the error. I changed the BIOS configuration from performance to power saving. I am looking for information on how to prevent this from hapenning again.

Is it possible for the power supply or motherboard to shut down the pc if the GPU gets too hot? I have been checking the GPU temperature on COUID HWmonitor and it has been high, reaching 84°C after 1 hour playing a demanding game. I bought a 1440p 1ms (Asus MG278-0) monitor a week ago is the GPU not being able to handle it?

Given what you've described, i'd recommend completely stripping down the PC

Check ALL psu cables & connectors for any signs of melting/burning
Check all connectors on devices powered by the PSU for the same
Check the motherboard & front & back for any signs of burning
Check the GPU and its pcie connector for the same

ty for the answer. I did as you said altough I could not find any sign of melting or burning the problem was solved by switching all cabbles to new better ones, no more strange behaviors.
