CPU or GPU upgrade better?

I currently am running a i5-4690k at 4.4ghz, and a R9 390, which handled most of the games fine until i recently upgraded to a 1440p 144hz monitor, when playing Battlefield 1 the frame rate hovers between 60-80fps most of the time but occasionally dips into the forties, with the cpu and gpu almost being constantly at 100% utilization, so I am not sure which would give me the largest increase in fps, or if I just need to upgrade both in order to see a difference, thanks in advance!

Coming from the proud owner of a i7-4930k @ 4 gigahertz;

I would have a hard time convincing myself to upgrade to a 4 year old cpu.

If you wait till Ice Lake you can get a 6 core i5.

Best case scenario here would be buy the Geforce 1070 and use it with your current rig and wait till Ice lake with its 6 core i5s.

Then buy ram, cpu and motherboard for Ice Lake.

There is also a case for leaving your current rig as is and building a whole new computer around an i7-7700k or Ice Lake coming soon since the only thing you can really salvage is the psu.

An i7-4790K is $390 on newegg ... money much better spent on a more recent cpu.

if you upgrade your CPU you will get a bottleneck in the GPU also if you upgrade your GPU you will get a bottleneck in CPU (100% usage) so, your GPU will not be able to give 100% of its power.
upgrading both will be the best idea!

Actually, I think u already know the answer
GPU and CPU usage already constantly maxed out
So u'll needs to upgrade both

For 1440p at 144hz, u're gonna need 1080/ti for the job, as for the CPU, just get the i7 4770k / i7 4790k as an upgrade :)
If u're on a budget:
Upgrading the GPU first should improve your experience, though the i5 will be the bottleneck on CPU demanding games (games with big maps like BF1, GTA5, etc will perform better with more core/threads)

You obviously can't use an i7-7700k with your current rig.

I was simply mentioning it as a price comparison to show how buying a 4790k is a bad idea.

For BF1 on 1440p, you need to replace both proc and gpu.
1. BF1 gain advantage over more cores/threads. There are 2 possibilities here. If you wanna get a proc now, go for Ryzen 7. If you can wait, wait and see for Coffee Lake or Ice Lake, which should be the best option.
2. As for GPU, go for GTX1080 or GTX1080Ti. Forget Vega 64, Vega 64 consumes more power and more expensive with the more or less same performance with GTX1080.

look for used instead?
i mean, that's the whole point of upgrading an old gen PC, u can find used stuff for it...
if he's going to buy a new one instead, i rather say, change the whole rig altogether :)
