So my MSI Lightning 980ti died from a failed overclock while testing (benchmark) after a few days and they accepted my failed component (thank goodness) Now they emailed me for an issue saying there is no replacement for a MSI 980ti lightning card(of course, they no longer make them) and asked for a swap. (a 10-series card for a 900 series card) although a good trade-off regardless.

But my question is the card Im offered and Im always skeptical. Since I hear all the time for RMA's and replacement compents coming semi-functional or refurbished or a slight-downgrade. Or that its a low binned item or something that has been sitting in their inventory for months. Or its a "returned" /"open-box" and recycled cards.

Given how its MSI. What are the odds that they will give me a refurbished model or a card thats not broken. Is this even worth it? I mean I have gone a month without a gpu and it kind of sucks to not have a GPU cause a majority of my games are pretty intensive and I do alot of video-editing and photoshop. I mean what do I do?

I just want some information so I can make a logical decision about this. either-way, its a good trade-off. But this is MSI rma service Im dealing with. And given how I have sent in this card 2x and already wasted time and money. Its just weighing a bit on my mind cause I thought I made a wise decision buying this card. Guessed wrong so Im looking for answers and further information with people that have dealt with this before. And honestly I dont know what to do.

[strike]Also I apologize for not properly spacing my paragraph[/strike]. I have 3 days to respond to the email. Thanks for your time and help in advance....

I dont think they would be upset at all if you were to email them asking what condition the replacement card is. I did the same with corsair when I had to RMA a PSU and they sent me a new unit for asking. Even if they say its a refurb I would still consider it, you could even ask them to offer you an extended warranty if it has to be a refurb unit.

You can be pleasant on the issue first, and just kindly ask if its a new card, and become more insistent if they wont, or offer the whole warranty option.
Have they told you what card they are offering you? Specific make and model?
Depending on those two things it could influence the decision.

I doubt they actually send out "gimped" cards for RMA requests, however they could well be refurb units (which may not mean anything bad).
I would ask them what specific card you are being offered, then ask if its factory new or a factory refurbished unit (possibly demand a new one?)

That all being said, its hard to believe they even honored the RMA request considering your card isnt covered. If you damage it from overclocking generally that violates warranty under the "user cased damage" section.

Well according to reviews and with the MSi team. The thing is that the lightning 980ti is a card meant to be overclocked. So they honored it. Even though I unscrewed and broke the seal to reapply some more gpu paste because when I first inspected the card and did its first installation. It didnt have adequate application. And they still accepted the card and repaired it. And tbh. I dont want to go too much into detail. But Ill say this. The card they are offering me is very high-tier. In fact its the highest tier they're offering to me out of the 10-series. So its definitely not a 1060 6gb. With that being said. Would they offer me a refurbed high-tier card? Or is a brand-new never been opened card? Or do they not use refurbed for a card that high-tier? And okay. Ill give you the details. Its a card one step below a 1080ti. So in that ballpark. Im just unsure and dont know what to do. Do you think the RMA team would be irritated if I ask them for a brand-new one? Or just say "yes" and hope to god they dont give me a "returned" item or "refurbished"?

also should I be nice and sweet talk them into giving me a brand-new factory-sealed box from their inventory? or Just outright say "I want a brand new card"? I dont want to be an ass and pressure them too much cause I sent it to them twice after this.....

Alright thanks man! Also. What should I honestly do with the card? because its like a really high-end card. Like not even the 980ti lightning I had is even high-end compared to this 10-series card. What would you do after you recieve the replacement? Should I just keep it?

he card they are offering me is very high-tier. In fact its the highest tier they're offering to me out of the 10-series.

A 980 Ti will likely be replaced with a GTX 1070. They perform almost identically. There's a very, very small chance that they would give you a 1080 due to stock issues with the 1070 and coin miners. There's 0 chance they would give you a 1080 Ti.

Will they give you a new card? I doubt it. Probably a refurb but it will still have a warranty of some type.

If you want the best possible potential RMA experience buy EVGA cards. Still no guarantee you would get a new one as a replacement even from them though.

Yes I know of this but I guess they decided to offer me the higher of the 2. And as of course they not making a 980ti cards anymore and even less so with a custom one like the lightning series. But crazily enough. They did offer me a high tiered card. Tbh. I would have accepted a 1070 at a moments notice cause its basically the same if not slightly better. But they did offer me the other card. Its not a 1080ti btw. I think they know thats too much of a replacement. And as well as that the 1070 is a very popular card as opposed to the others. So Idk. I must be lucky. At the same time relieved. Idk if it wil be more reliable than the 980ti that I had. But since its clock is wayyy faster than the 980ti overclocked and its a nice card to the say least. I keep my fingers-crossed that they will be willing to help me out and give me a new one fresh from the factory or just simply anything but an "open-box" or "recycled" cards. I mean it is MSI afterall. So Im holding my breath as I had RMA'd the card twice and it had issues. The first one just died for heat issues and it had a failing fan. The second one was unstable and for some reason. Had OC problems. it would boost its overclock improperly and wouldnt stay at the frequency. Just up and down and up and down. and it had display issues. Like it had these faint horizontal lines when you go over anything grey-in-colour in a environment and also had random black screen-flashes. Not to mention it ran hotter than usual and an obnoxious coil whine. Like it went off like a dog whistle.... I was very unlucky with their "repairs" who knows.

Hey sorry for such a long reply from an old thread. I know reviving an old thread is bad but one thing Id like to mention for anyone that is curious and is in this situation and is worried about rmaing with MSI. In the end. I got a GTX 1080. A used one..... Not new. And from the email I recieved. They said they cannot compound the warranty for the card and every card that they do exchange is a certified refurbed gpu. Now I did get lucky and it seems the 1080 is working. DOnt know for how long. I mean its a 1080 founders edition and it does thermal-throttle quite a bit cause its a hot running card. 1080 needs substantial cooling and at some point down the road, Iam going to cash in on the 1080 and probably get a 1070 with a decent cooler on it. 1080 is nice and all. But its too much for my setup. Lmao. Anyways I hope that answers your question. Tell me what you got. I hope you got as lucky as I did and didnt get a shitty 1070 from MSI...
