Should I keep my processor and upgrade around it.

current set up:
Motherboard: Aspire TC-605
Processor: Intel core i7 4770
Video card: AMD Radeon HD 8570 2 GB
8 GB RAM
1 TB Hard drive

Is my processor, ram and HD worth keeping. What about my motherboard. I want to game in 1080p games like Battlefield 1.
Willing to spend up to 2000 tomorrow on a new system, but if i can save on a processor, then why not.

Solution
You should be able to get something decent for it. For what it is it's a fine system. But if you get a new one tomorrow, I would not go less than the i7 7700, though the 7700k is preferable. It's just that the current intel chips, I think with the new AMD ryzen out, most of them don't make sense, especially with Coffee Lake coming out. But if you go with the 7700k, especially with the ability to overclock, it will stay relevant longer. That said, depending on pricing and what you want to spend, you may look and see if they have the AMD Ryzen 5 1600 or the Ryzen 7 chips. On single core tasks like gaming, they will be about as fast as what you have, but not as fast as the 7700k. However, in multithreaded tasks, so if you are doing...

My psu is too weak for a new gpu that would be worth upgrading too imo, and my case is too small for most graphics cards (about 6 inch max) with this build. Ive been reading that to upgrade to ie: i7 7700 is not worth it and i will not bottleneck with a 4770 gaming at 1080p.
Yeah I want a new system to last me 3-4 years and easy to upgrade on.

Pretty much decided on a new system, just wondering what people think of my CPU, can it handle a 1060 6gb or a 1070 8gb with no bottlenecking for a few years atleast.
If i can keep my CPU, ill take the ram and Harddrive out, if not ill keep this PC as a back up or sell/ give it away

The cpu you have is good for another year or two, but if you have 2 grand to spend, I wouldn't bother with trying to get old parts to fit around it. Thing is that is a locked cpu, so it's as fast as it will ever be. If you have 2k, I would either build a AMD Ryzen system with an R7 8 core 16 thread cpu and new board, ram, case, power supply, gpu, ssd, the whole 9 yards and sell the old box off, or wait for intels Coffee lake chips and then do the same thing.

The Ryzen chips in single core will about as fast as what you have, but in multitasking will run circles around it. Intel's current Kaby lake is faster in single core for gaming though, but I would wait for Coffee lake to see what they bring out before I spend on an intel box right now.

Budget is 2000 cad so thats more like 1600 usd. The place im going to requires to buy and install windows and a wifi card. Which will be about 200 on top of the build. But i think my best bet is to get brand new everything and then get a couple $$$ from my current pc, as opposed to having to upgrade again in 1 or 2 years

The 4770 is still a contender. Even my 4690K is a contender today. It can be paired with the 1080 without a bottleneck. I'd not venture into 1080Ti territory.

What is a comfortable amount you are willing to invest into upgrades?

Which monitor are you using?

Which PSU do you have?

The Place im going to seems to have slightly better deal on i7 7700 (even k's ) than the AMD ryzens (1600 or 1700) so im leanin slightly towards Intel, even though their new hardware is dropping soon i am purchasing tomorrow. PC is used for gaming/ watching netflix /studying and internet browsing. Unless

Okay. Sounds like you are looking for new and ease the burden with a sale. Building can save you a lot of money. It is really simple. Watch a video or three to see how simple it really is. Do you want to take this thing to a shop if anything goes wrong or you want to upgrade? Pay their fees in addition to the cost of the part? I'd take some time to get to know what you are using.

I can put together a parts list if you want to go that route.

Require Windows? Okay. A wi-fi card too? Odd.

I am building my new set up, just buying the parts at the shop and then its being put together in front of my eyes. They seem to provide decent prices good service and warrenties, and i dont want to risk any shipping problems. The wifi card is only 30 $ but yea a little odd.

I understand what you mean though. I usually buy all of my parts at microcenter, which is a computer chain store in the USA. They are very good about returns etc. Probably a better deal on the 7700 though because they know Coffee lake is around the corner then good luck getting rid of them. If you go intel, get the K chip. Yes it will cost more, but will allow you options to overclock later in case you wish to do that add a little extra performance down the road.

Thanks and also for the info on getting the 7700k, for just 50$ more sounds worth it if its more future proof.
Guess im gonna get a brand new system . My i7 4770 only has about 3 years of light to moderate use, so i can probably still sell this pc for the cpu and ram alone

so now im wondering whether or not too keep my parts and do this: upgrade to a bigger and better case, stick a gtx 1080 and a 600w PSU, and a SSD. Since i would have to buy a new copy of windows this might save me close to 1000$. Im trying to think whats best in the long run and not just for the next year.

Consider Sky and Kaby lake. Some boards can accept both generation of CPUs, with a BIOS update. Coffee Lake is coming out. They will not be backwards compatible with the current gen. of Intel CPUs. I have a sneaking suspicion that Intel may allow two generations on this board as well. It is unfortunately a baseless assumption but one that may happen. It's just something to watch for. That would offer the most longevity that may make your larger investment a little more worth it.

thanks for your answer im just a little confused to what you mean. Are you saying that my motherboard is getting a bit outdated, and possibly not future proof or even compatible with some new cpu's.

Upgrade the box you have now if it will fit the 1080 and PSU. Keep everything else same. Maybe add an SSD for a boot drive for some extra speed. That chip should push the 1080, let Intel release their new CPUs and and if they are releasing any, thought I heard next year sometime. Let all that shake out. When the dust settles you will have a better idea where you want to be long term.

I'm saying that a Coffee Lake motherboard may offer the most longevity. It wouldn't be right for me to say that my Z97 board would offer me the most longevity. I do however think that with a 4690K along with a 1080 it'll be fine for at least another couple of years of gaming with varying in-game settings. But you are looking past a year and probably two which is why I recommend waiting for and looking into Coffee Lake boards for a possible upgrade solution.

What would I do? I would double your RAM with a fresh 16GB kit(Hyper Furyx 1866MHz(if your board accept the same as mine) kit, install a 500GB SSD, install a Gigabyte WIndforce or G1 1080 and call it good. My next purchase will be a 1080 and then new RAM.

I like this idea, by chip you mean my processor right?

what I thought Coffee Lake made CPU's
yes i am ignorant lol
and mine is a 4770, not exactly sure how that compares with the 4690k anymore

cool, seems like its a good idea to wait for new generation of CPU and upgrade everything else.
The only reason I would want to keep my motherboard is to keep my version of windows.

so I would put my CPU, motherboard, ram and HDD in the new case with a 1080 8gb and a new PSU, as well as a 256gb SSD. and maybe a 212 cooler

i just feel like my motherboard is cheap/outdated, cant find much to tell me otherwise
