My laptop motherboard recently fried but the HDD is still good I have a desktop with an external HDD slot but the one from the laptop will not fit because of the mounting bracket flanges will the drive be ok if I remove the bracket?

Solution
When you say 'remove the bracket' I'll assume you are talking about a 2.5" to 3.5" bracket and not some superfluous proprietary bracket for the laptop.
The drive will work fine 'floating' in the desktop but I don't recommend leaving it that way. Even a small nudge could bang the drive against the inside of the case and turn it into an expensive paperweight.
