Hello, Im new here to tom's Hardware. But I have been a lurker here in terms of getting information regarding computer stuff.

I just need to hear professional and experienced opinions regarding my dilemma.

I used to have GSKILL Ripjaws X DDR3 1600MHZ (2x4GB) Dual channel (https://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-12800cl9d-8gbxl ) but one piece was defective after almost 3 years of service. Im planning to buy another set ( same as above ) so that I can have 12 GB of RAM, placing the fresh pair on dual channel and the other remaining piece is still going to be used.

Is this a bad setup? What might happen? Should I just buy 2x8GB and better off selling the other one?

Thank you!

Its not a bad setup. It may or may not work, but make sure that the new ram matches the old one in all terms(even the make), else you will see a compatibility issue. Check if your motherboard supports dual channel. if yes then please check the below link to optimize the dual channel with three ram sticks on your motherboard.

https://www.intel.ca/content/www/ca/en/support/boards-and-kits/000005657.html

Place the new set on the same color code for the dual channel to work on those two. the old once can be placed in different color code since it will be running in the single channel. if your mobo supports flex mode then there wont be any performance drop. if not there will be a slight drop in the performance when placing the third one on...

But i suggest you to use the third ram as well instead of selling it.

Good Luck.:) Peace.
