Quick backstory I could swear when I built this PC I had two 4GB ram sticks in the slots 1 and 3. When I went to upgrade my computer I discover that Either I was wrong about where I had put those sticks years ago, or I had moved them at some point as they were in slots 1 and 4. Naturally i put them in slots 1 an3 and put the upgrade sticks in 2 and 4.(2GB sticks) When I tried to boot computer it threw a memory error. Thus I removed the new sticks and left the old in slots 1 and 3. Again a memory error. I then moved one of the 4GB sticks to the 2 slot and tried to boot, again a memory error. Only when my two original sticks are in slots 1 and 4 does my computer boot.

TLDR: Slots 2 and 3 don't work on my MOBO MSI 970 gaming RAM is not the cause as far as I can tell.

Specs:
MSI 970 gaming mobo
AMD phenom 2 x4 970 @ 3.5 GHz No overclock
GTX 970
1 TB HDD + 250 HDDWindows 10
650 watt PSU
and one disconnected FDD

Solution

Your issue has nothing to do with mixing memory modules; 2 slots are defective and they don't work properly if you install a module in one of them. There is a remote possibility the issue is with the CPU, but not very likely since one slot per channel is defective.

Was worried about that, as it is, its not going to make a huge difference, I just figured I would use some of the stuff I had laying around.

I don't know why this isn't in my first post. It seems odd to me however that slots 2 and 3 would not work while 1 and 4 do because of the way the channels are set up or am I missing something with how they work?

No my original two are Kingston 4GB DDr3 1333MHz and The two 2 GB sticks I wanted to install were out of a lenovo thinkstation. 1333 MHz DDr3. I was attempting to use my MoBos dual channel mode.

@YoAndy
@GhislainG

It was my understanding that in dual channel mode it didn't matter so much so long as the memory matched PER CHANNEL and it would have. I'm going to mark GhislainG's solution as the answer as it makes the most sense to my mind. (The only issue I have had with my CPU is heat in the years of using it)
