Solution
Ethernet cable is best, followed by a good (like AV2-1000 or better) powerline adapter, followed by wireless.

edit: and if you must use wireless and cannot get an AP near (and have a fat wallet) consider the updated Netgear Orbi mesh system as you can see HERE.

You need to have a wireless signal that is available to you to use the adapter -- it only allows your computer to access an existing wireless signal that you can access (that is one that you have the security passkey to access or is an open free access radio like at a coffee shop).

owh and uh does it also 'boost' you're mbit/s? or does it give you the same mbit/s that you're modem 'sends' out?

The speed of wireless will be lower than the marketed speed of the router or adapter. It does not boost your speed in any way and will almost always be slower than an Ethernet cable connection, and will also have higher latency (aka lag) for things like gaming.
