average operating temp/voltage of Phenom 2 x4 970 BE?

In a previous thread I asked about unusually high temperature with my CPU, and while I was able to resolve the issue (radiator caked with dust), I was informed that 1.425v is apparently high for a Phenom2 x4 970 that is not over clocked. As it is, when I run prime 95, after about four tests my thermal margin (as per AMD Overdrive ) sits steady at 4 degrees C to 1 Degree C(I cut it off there) depending on ambient temperature. Given this what should be the idle and load temperature for my CPU, and what voltage should it be at? I am using a corsair H60 CPU cooler if it helps.

Solution

You could try using OCCT as an alternative to p95. It works well for stability testing and does not generate as much heat.

Start lowering it until its not stable, that would give you the lowest possible voltages.
From what I remember and have been seeing, 1.425v is stock for the 970, which honestly isnt surprising.
I would see how something in the 1.3XXv range goes, they intentionally set the voltages higher on the higher clocked phenom models.

Yes, this is accurate. If you lower it slowly and test along the way you will see little instabilities before the crashing normally.

For reference, my old system is running a Phenom II X4 965 BE @ 3.8GHz on 1.344V.

So after attempting to lower the voltage by .1v in the BIOS, I opened CPUID HWmonitor to keep an eye on voltage alongside AMD overdrive to double check. Everything was fine until I did a prime 95 stress test, the voltage reset to 1.4** V, so I (stupidly) decided I was going to use the AMD supplied software to lower the voltage the desired .1v. Windows was not happy. It crashed, and I checked the BIOS to make sure my settings were fine, and my .1v undervolt was still saved(as expected). Unfortunately my PC was not loading past the windows splash screen so I shut it down, and removed the undervolt. I set it back to auto, and is now back to normal.

it would appear that my CPU is not having it, and as I found out in another thread, either it or my MOBO is damaged, so I think Ill stop messing with it at this point and hope my system doesn't fall apart.

If you dont feel comfortable messing with setting anymore, you could simply get a better cooler. The h60 is not any better than a budget air cooler such as the 212 EVO, and is ourperformed by something like the Cryorig H7. Getting something better than that would lower temps perfectly.

I did not know that. Although I if I remember correctly I got the CPU then I was in 7th or 8th grade, im 20 now, and I got the cooler at the same time. Its never been off the CPU - I think.

I had a suspicion the cooler was not quite good enough for a few days now, but I don't know where to find information on what they can handle.

Also I would like to apologize you answered my first thread on here and I left you hanging, sorry about that. (I was asking about overclocking, I did not know the extent of my problems then)

I cleaned it a few days ago, it was caked with dust. I might be over reacting but AMD overdrive says that im within 2-4c of thermal limit depending on the ambient temperature just after 6 cycles of Prime95 or so.

I don't have any thermal paste, so I guess im at a dead end for now. Thanks!

Yes, p95 is almost overkill even for stability testing as far as temps are concerned. The only actual activity that I have even seen get close to those temps is video conversion from MKV to MP4, H.264 encoding, etc

Alright. I'm still learning, all this stuff. To be honest The only reason im using it is that is what seems to be the got to thing is.
