Need advice to upgrade system (GPU mainly)

Hallo, I currently can't afford to replace my whole system so I would like to ask for advice about what is best to spend some money on. I know that my GPU is the bottleneck of the system since I can't run most games smoothly and probably the easiest to replace, but I am open to opinions.

My specs:

MOBO: ASUSTek P8P67 PRO Rev 1.xx
CPU: Intel Core i7-2600K CPU @3.4GHz 3.40 GHz
OS: Windows 10 PRO 64 bit
RAM: 8.00 GB
GPU Nvidia GeForce GTX 550 ti

I mainly use my PC for gaming, browsing internet and reading e-books, so of course what needs to improve is the gaming power.

Up to what GeForce generation can that motherboard support?
Which graphic card would be the best money/performances wise?

DO NOT try to update your bios unless the update fixes a problem that is impacting you.
A failed flash can render your motherboard useless, possibly permanently.

Your cpu is still excellent and you should be able to upgrade the graphics card to something as strong as a GTX1060. It will use about the same power as your GTX550ti and is a big jump in capability.
600w will let you run up to a GTX1080ti

The motherboard has a PCIE X16 graphics slot and can support any modern graphics card made today.

You will get what you pay for in any mid range graphics card.

If you are uncertain what to get, I suggest you buy a EVGA graphics card and register it promptly.
EVGA has a free 90 day trade up policy if you decide you need something...

depending on your budget: (thank the miners for the volatile price increase :()
1050ti starts around 150$
1060 3gb starts around 190$
or just jump all the way to 1080 for 500$

your choice depends on how powerful is your PSU, how deep is your wallet, and how big is your case :D

PS: upgrade your BIOS to the latest before changing the GPU, i had a mobo that pretty much the same as yours (supports up to 3rd gen Intel) and i couldn't use my 1050ti until i upgraded my BIOS the latest version available :)

Budget? You can support pretty much any modern GPU depending on your power supply. The i7 2600k despite it's age is still a very capable cpu, especially with an overclock. I think something like a 1060 6gb would be a good fit, but like said above prices are all over the place due to the latest mining craze.

Budget-wise I rather stay low because I imagine I will replace the whole thing in a couple years and maybe give this system to someone as a gift. 250 € max is what I would like, the lowest the better.

I am a bit worried about the motherboard though. I did some research on the subject and turns out that a model of P8P67 was recalled from the market for free because defective. Using CPU-Z it tells me that mine is the Rev is 1.xx instead of 3.00. Am I still able to upgrade the bios? Southbridge is Rev. B3 if that means something.

The case still has 60 mm (bit more than 2 inches) free, if compared to what sits there right now, the GTX 550.

edit: The Power supply should be 600W.

try to find the latest BIOS version in your mobo brand's website
PSU should be more than enough for up to 1080 (if it's high quality)
as for the recommended GPU with your budget, pretty much 2 choice:

I think I will go with a 1050. Love how the EVGA site has also the dimensions listed.

I hope the MOBO will not mess things up. I will try the GPU first and see if it works. Worst case scenario I can replace both.

hope your BIOS right now supports your new GPU
coz i had JETWAY T161MA (same as H61 mobo, non-OCable, supports 2nd & 3rd gen Intel CPU) and it won't work with the 1050ti until i update its BIOS to the latest one

updating the BIOS is pretty easy (at least for me it does, i just downloaded the latest one and ran it immediately) as long the process is not interupted especially during the flashing
