Can I overclock my GPU and CPU safely with this setup?

So recently I decided that I was going to do a major cleaning of my PC. (i.e rerouting cables, changing fan locations, and getting rid of dust buildup.) I also decided that I was going to see if I could overclock my GPU and CPU.

I'll list my setup below and see what you guys think.


  • - i5 4670k
    - Hyper 212 Evo
    - Gigabyte GA-B85M-HD3
    - Adata XPG v2 DDR3 1600MHz (8GB)
    - WD Blue 1TB
    - ASUS R9 380 Strix 2GB
    - Corsair 350D
    - Seasonic M12ll 620 Bronze Modular
    - Windows 10 64-Bit


Tell me you're thoughts, and feel free to give me suggestions as to what I can upgrade in the near future, but for now I'm broke. :/

The cpu: No because of the B85 chipset.

Memory: Yes. With a small voltage increase you should be able to set it to the next ddr3 speed of 1866.

GPU. Yes. It's likely already factory overclocked. Watch your temps. You will need to test it to make sure it's stable. Running something like Furmark will give you a fast idea of what to expect. If it crashes in certain games then it's set to high.
Both the memory and gpu core can be increased. A more aggressive fan profile can help. You will have to find a compromise between noise and lower temps. Asus has software too. Or use MSI afterburner.

-Every card is different. On my GTX970 the fan is at 0% till 50C, then 45% till 60C, 57% till 70C and then it's gradual till 100% fan at 80C. This is way more aggressive than the card's stock fan profile.

Nvidia came out with power limit throttling, it lowers the gpu clock when the power goes to high under high loads or the temp goes to high. It maxes out at only 110%.
AMD quickly followed with "Powertune". So you will need to set it higher to something like +15%.
This is why modding the fan profile is so important. Lower temps=lower power because chips use less power when the temp is lower. This will allow higher clocks.
When testing with furmark, you can see the clock speeds. You will see it will throttle after a couple of runs.

The CPU can be maxed out by maxing out the "Turbo" so it runs at it's turbo speed on all 4 cores all the time.

You will have to google that as i only read that others have done that on various intel cpus.

Oh yeah i forget in windows power management settings you can also set the power savings for the cpu to never lower the cpu speed. I did that with my A6-3650 Llano. It's the same for intel too.
So it runs at 3.61ghz all the time. Yes it wastes power but you want more speed right?

You have the correct cpu cooler for doing this as well. It wont work with the stock oem coolers.


-Download and install something like CPU-Z. (There are a few others)
It will show you the core speed.

It looks like it maxes out at 3.76 GHz on a locked board like you have. (Same as the i5-4670)

Okay, so switching to a motherboard witha Z chipset would allow me to overclock. That's understandable. I can do that in the future. Yeah, I'll definitely look into overclocking my GPU.

How would I go about overclocking my RAM? I'm assuming I need to go into the bios.
About the GPU, I use MSI Afterburner to control my fans. They usually run at 50% idle, and under load its usually 70% speed. I could careless about the noise. Once I start going above maybe 65C I get a decrease in performance.
