Howdy !

Up here is my current setup. I want to get into overclocking my CPU, as I already have done it with my GPU. I need your advice regarding : mobo, PSU and PCU cooler. Just keep in mind that I want to start slow, as I have no experience in OC. Therefore, I want to medium OC, I don't want to push it too far. If I can OC my CPU at half what it can take, I'll be happy for a first try.

Obviously, I'll need a Z mobo and I was looking for this one, as it supports SLI (for future's sake) :

Question :
DDR4 3866+(OC)/ 3733(OC)/ 3600(OC)/ 3200(OC)/ 2933(OC)/ 2800(OC)/ 2400/ 2133
Does it mean I won't be able to OC my 2133 RAM ?

Plus, with mail-in rebate it would cost me only 200CAD. Any thoughts on this MOBO ? Reviews seems good, just asking if anyone here personally tried it out.

Now, I really need your help with the PSU and the PCU cooler. Look at the list for my current build.

Will a 520W PSU be enough for overcloking ?
Is the 212 EVO enough to keep my CPU cool for, let's say, medium OC ?
If not, what would be a good cooler ?

I am not on a budget, but cheaper is better, of course not at the expense of quality. I just don't need overkill stuff for the sake of having it.

Thanks in advance for your input !

Solution

2133 MHz is the standard DDR4 speed for Skylake, and anything higher is considered an overclock. That's why the other speeds listed say "(OC)". You would be able to manually overclock your 2133 MHz memory on any Z series mobo, but you may not get very far. Typically, if you want faster memory, you buy a kit with faster rated speeds, and automatically apply the overclock by enabling the XMP profile.

Regarding your other questions, your [strike]mobo[/strike] PSU and cooler are fine for a moderate overclock. I can get my 6700K to 4.5GHz on all cores with a 212 EVO, could maybe even go a bit higher if I...

Edit: meant to say PSU and cooler, not mobo and cooler.

I also have a 6700K and a hyper 212 evo, personally I just changed the multiplier to 44 and left it at that. For now at least it's more performance than I need so I see no point in pushing it any harder, would have left it at stock but that just seems wrong somehow.

Thanks for your answers, guys.

What about my PSU (520W) ? Do you think it's plenty with my current build ? PCpartpicker states 362W usage with this build, but I guess OCing will raise that up a bit.

The PSU is a good choice and should be fine, the motherboard looks good also. I have an Asus itx Z170 myself but the newer chipset makes sense.

PCs are not as power hungry as they used to be, if you do go SLI in future that will need a beefier PSU but otherwise no problem. I'd advise against SLI personally unless you have a pressing need for high framerates, it's just more hassle all round and doesn't always work. Selling the 1070 and upgrading to a 1080Ti or whatever next gen options come out makes more sense to me.

But then I'm perfectly happy at 60 fps with Vsync on my 3 yr old GTX980 :) I know some people like more.
