While MX2 and MX4 are popular because they perform very well in tests (which one is better depends on mounting pressure) and come in huge 30g tubes, they are known to deteriorate requiring reapplication every couple years (perhaps the secret to their good performance is thin silicone oil which pumps itself out after repeated thermal cycling).

Prolimatech also comes in 30g tubes and is available in thick or thin variants. The thin PK-2 is better suited for CPUs with heatspreaders because it's a lot easier to squeeze it into a very thin layer, while the thick PK-3 would be better for bare dies like GPUs or laptop chips. For those I prefer Gelid GC-Extreme which is thick like AS5 but much easier to clean, as it tests near the very top and comes in a not-too unreasonably small 3.5g tube.

1g is enough for about 4 CPUs but is nearly the same price as the larger 3.9g to 5g tubes of Grizzly pastes which would be good for a more reasonable 16 -20 applications. Even if you are only using it for one CPU this gives you more chances to fix any screwups!
