Hello,

I have a Gateway DX4200-09 with AM2+ Phenom II x4 9150e 1.8Ghz 65W. I am wondering if the CPU Phenom II x4 910e 2.6Ghz 65W would work as replacement with same motherboard Rs780 chipset is 780g? Its AM3 and uses 65W just like my current one. Or is there a better AM2+ CPU to use? I found online a thread where one person mentions using the Phenom II x4 840 95W cpu. But then i will need new PSU and I am not sure about BIOS. There was never a BIOS upgrade since PC release late 2008,

Currently PC has Windows 10 Home x64, 8GB PC6400 800Mhz DDR2, 640GB 7200RPM HDD. I know building new PC be better but then I have to buy all components and windows... but if i could just replace CPU and improve performance then that would be cheaper and get to use my machine for several more years.

I have seen on ebay the CPU Phenom II x4 910e 2.6Ghz 65W is more expensive than Phenom II x4 840 95W 3.2Ghz even though the 840 is faster. Then AMD Phenom II X4 830 95W 2.8Ghz for around $20 which is cheaper, and would provide me the performance boost i seek. But those 95W cpus. would require new PSU, and i have no idea what PSU could fit in that mATX box. Also running higher watt cpu might be bad?

CPU socket types are not cross compatible. AM3 will not work on AM2+ socket

The 9000-series AMD Phenom X4 processors are the last supported by that socket. Phenom X4 9950 is the most powerful of that line-up.

Clearly the OP is on a strict budget if we are talking about $30 eBay processors

Thanks for the replies. I am just a little confused because some things online point to those cpus i mention being compatible with AM2+ like this it says both sockets so do i believe that? http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Phenom%20II%20X4%20910e%20-%20HD910EOCK4DGM%20(HD910EOCGMBOX).html

Since old CPUs are way cheaper now than they were 8 years ago, i think its perfect time to make a small upgrade specially since cost might be $20-30. I just don't know which one would work best for my motherboard. Its an OEM mobo, i know, But some times people figure out ways to get past that. 3 years ago I had another old machine, it came wiith Pentium 4 and I upgraded it to Pentium D 3.4Ghz for just $5, it was one heck of an upgrade and made it faster. I am looking for similar boost by upgrading just the CPU. Windows 10 is more heavier than Windows 7 and machine would benefit from a faster CPU. After all the 9150e 1.8Ghz was never known to be fast, it has always been slow. haha

I did a bit more looking and it seems that AM3 processors with a TDP of 95W or less may be compatible.

That would include the two that you listed.
