Surface Pro 4 vs. the Surface 3?

My Surface 3's screen broke (Yay toddlers). Given the cost of the screen itself, let alone having someone replacing it (I'm not experienced with tablet or phone hardware), it's more worth it to replace it.

Please note this is the Surface 3, not the Surface Pro 3. I know there are threads comparing the Pro 3 to the Pro 4, but I see none comparing the 3 to the Pro 4.

My tablet still works, but I want to sell it since it's touchscreen functionality went dead. That means if I get another Surface 3, I'll need another Type Cover for it since the original one needs it's keyboard to function. I also have a dock for it but that's like $20 now.

Cases- The only ones that allow the use of the built-in kickstand are more pricey. But I'm not going to be sealing the kickstand, for sure, so I'm getting that for either device.

The Surface 3 (128 GB model) on Amazon is $358. A Type Cover is $89. The only good case I found is $45. A screen protector is $14. That's $506.

The Surface Pro 4 with an m3 processor at Microsoft's Store (refurbished) is $639. A Type Cover is either $116 or $142 with a fingerprint sensor (Not sure whether I should get that or not either). A good case is $51. A screen protector is $15. That's either $821 or $849.

So now that I have the prices, I have no idea what to do. The Pro 3 is no longer available. The battery life appears to be the same between the 3 and Pro 4. The performance on the Pro 4, I'm guessing, is way better, even with the m3- Although I have no idea. The Type Cover also looks much better, with a bigger touch-pad and possibly a fingerprint sensor. As for reliability and how long it'll last, I have no clue about either of them. I'm very careful with my devices, and with a case they should be fine physically, but what would a Surface Pro 4 degrade (battery life, device failures, etc) faster than the Surface 3?

I have a powerful desktop, and I used to have a laptop but I sold it right before the screen broke on the Surface. Laptops are too heavy for me, and I really enjoyed using the Surface. So this will be replacing my laptop now. Would a Surface 3 be powerful enough with it's Atom to be my portable computer? Is the m3 processor on the Pro 4 almost as bad? Are the improvements of the Pro 4 compared to the 3 worth the $330?

I understand I am comparing the last RT successor to a Pro device that came out a few months later (And is pretty much the Surface 4, with it's m3). So does that mean the Pro 4 is really much, much better than the 3? Also, does the Pen from the Surface 3/Surface Pro 3 work on the Pro 4?

The Pro (2017) is just way too high of a price for me. I already spent $1,000 on my powerful desktop, no need to spend another $1,042 on a portable version of it. If only it could be cheaper.

Sorry guys, just really confused as to what to do. I could just use my Surface 3 as it is without Touch capability, even though I will miss it and using the Pen on it, but everyone has been telling me I should have a fully functioning device. And I would like one- Hopefully if I do buy something, this Surface can still sell as a netbook with a crack in the corner.

I feel like with everything I consider, I think "Well the next thing up is only a hundred more" and before I know it I get to the Pro 2017 at $1,042..

Surface line, pro and not -pro, is overpriced in general.
But yes, if you want a Surface or Surface pro that badly, the m3 does worth the extra price rather than going for the Atom.
I5 is actually the ideal option for portable needs but you have to pay quite a lot more to get a Surface pro with an I5.

I would be looking more to those Lenovo Yoga or ASUS Zenbook flip to get an I5 with decent price rather than any Surface series.

So you are saying that yes, the Pro 4 is worth it.

M3 is far more powerful than the, that is good to know. I was wondering that because reviewers said the same thing about the m3 Pro 4 as they did about the Atom Surface 3- use it for just some word processing and a tab or two of browsing. So good to know that the m3 is better than that.

Thanks for your opinion. I'll also wait and see what others have to say. I am leaning towards spending the extra $330 towards the Pro 4.

Also, does the Pro 4 have a Windows Hello camera? If I get it, I am unsure if the Fingerprint is worth it either.

The M3 is floating somewhere between i3 and i5.
Atom X is weak.

The M3 should be between 50-100% more powerful than the Atom.
It is still however not yet on the i5 level.

Fingerprint is not really important for me on laptops/tablets. I used it daily for phones tho'.
Camera? I dunno. I never used laptop cameras or webcams. I use only my smartphone for those.

So that makes the i5 not worth the price gap, but the m3 is worth it compared to the Atom. I see.

To answer my own question, the camera doesn't support Windows Hello. The fingerprint reader is needed for that. So I might get that.

I think my decision may be to actually get nothing but a case, though. My Surface 3 does work...I'm just going to miss the Touch functionality. It actually barely looks damaged at all. I think the fall dented the corner, which knocked the screen out of place a bit, making it farther from the Touchscreen on that side (I think the Touch and Screen parts are separate in this case). Maybe I can even fix it without opening it...
