Hello, i have a gaming Laptop (Alienware M11X R2) with External GPU (GTX 1060 6GB) but the question is: can i run modern games such as overwatch - call of duty black ops 3 - DOOM 4? i don't care if it was on low settings, or it will just run at 30FPS

my Laptop Specs:-

Intel Core i7 640UM

eGPU: GTX 1060 6GB

8GB RAM DDR3

Solution

A lot of games should still run fairly well, if you don't mind framerates getting down around 30fps at times. Some, like Doom and Overwatch, are not very demanding on the CPU, and you might potentially even manage framerates closer to 60fps. Since the graphics card is strong, you might even be able to turn up the graphics settings fairly high in many games without hurting performance. Just don't be surprised if some games have performance issues. Those that depend more heavily on CPU performance, like the Witcher 3, might spend a lot of their time below 30fps. In other games you might occasionally encounter stutters, and moments when the framerate...

The problem would be that this is an ultraportable laptop that appears to have first launched in 2010. I found a review here...

So, the CPU is a 7 year old, 2-core, 4-thread design intended for ultraportable devices. As such, the CPU performance should be far behind even what a current generation Pentium G4560 would offer, though I couldn't immediately find any benchmarks comparing that particular UM processor against any relatively modern CPUs. The GTX 1060 should have the power to run any of those games very well, but the CPU will greatly restrict performance, and some of the more demanding games might even be unplayable, no matter the graphics settings used. It's difficult to say much they would be affected by the low CPU performance without looking into it more though.

i'm using EXP GDC External GPU, and yeah, it's really great for everything

i tried the eGPU, but i haven't tried to run any game (to be honest, i ran GTA V with 60+FPS at high settings)

Oh yeah, oops. Saw the 6 and thought it was a skylake i7. DDR3 should have given it away, didn't read it carefully enough.

If you have the setup already, you should try it with some games, and see how it performs for yourself.

You should have a PCI Express x16 mini (Which is 97% available on laptops)

there's a video shows that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TH3jDVuHCD8

also, what's your laptop brand? is it Alienware M11X R2 i7 model?

There's no bios changes bro, since the laptop (Alienware m11x r2) has switchable graphics, all you need is just plug the eGPU in the laptop, put the graphics card on it, and install the nvidia Driver, that's all, but i don't guarantee that you will run modern games, but i guarantee that you will run gta v at high settings for about 60 FPS and Call of Duty Black ops 2 also cuz i play them on my laptop, also you can run GTA V on normal settings without eGPU for about 30FPS 720P
