Visiting a friend with a secure wifi network. I have the password and have used the wifi on my Iphone & iIpad many times. On this visit both of my devices showed I was connnected to network but I could not get online. Their daughter was also visiting, she has an android phone, and she had the same problem, but the homeowner was able to get online even though we couldn't. He said he had not made any changes recently or had any problems so we are perplexed. Especially since it happened to two of us with different types of devices. Any help appreciated.

Solution
dunno. I wouldn't think that the router's default settings were to whitelist things, so the only idea in my head is that somebody HAD to have changed the settings.

I'm thinking that the homeowner has it set so that only certain ip addresses can access the internet, so maybe you could change the settings of the router to allow all devices to access the internet.

Hi

Many routers can be set to use a white list of MAC addresses
Unless someone with admin access to router allows users onto local network they are blocked

There are usually labels showing mac address on laptops
Not sure about how to find MAC address info on smart phones

Ask home owner to check for whitelist settings
Alternativly there are two frequency bands for wireless N
2.4 & 5 GHz
As well as wireless AC on 5 GHZ
Maybe one band has been disabled or has a different password

This has never been a problem before and the homeowner doesn't have a tech bone in his body so he never changes anything! Could he have changed something without realizing that he had done so?
