G'day. I'm looking to build a system with fairly high throughput and low latency for capturing digital video. The video capture card is x4 PCIe. I plan to put in a single graphics card -- no SLI etc. I want the capture card to be on PCIe lanes directly connected to the CPU.
As I understand it, my first key choice is CPU socket type, and everything else will flow from there. As I understand it, below are the four socket types that could possibly make sense, including the most powerful chipset that matches that socket, that chipset's release year, and the PCIe lanes that chipset will give.
LGA 1150, Z97 (2014) 8 PCIe 2.0
LGA 2011-v3, X99 (2014) 8 PCIe 2.0
LGA 1151, Z270 (2017) 24 PCIe 3.0
LGA 2066, X299 (Q3 2017) 24 PCIe 3.0
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the bottom two are just newer versions of the top two, and so I can eliminate the top two from consideration.
What's the key difference(s) between LGA 1150/1151 and LGA 2011/2066?
(I've had a bad experience with an LGA 2011 a few years ago: my understanding was that the machine was high throughput, but also high latency, and this did not play nice with the real-timey requirements of digital video capture.)
