With hdmi to hdmi cable connected to a monitor from your laptop it is not possible to use your laptop as a second screen since the hdmi port on your laptop is hdmi in and not out.

But with a laptop having a usb-c port and a usb-c to hmdi cable, would this be possible? Since usb-c supports hdmi in and out?

If so, how?

Probably not but you need to look at the laptop specs. Usb-c may support alternate modes but it needs to be labeled otherwise it's just a normal data only usb port like type a. You have in and out backwards. Hdmi out of a laptop is for an external monitor. The laptop is sending out a video signal for the monitor to display. You want hdmi in to go into the laptop to have the laptop as a monitor.

It's probably not worth it to use a laptop as a second screen in that sense, the trouble isn't worth it.

I hear lots of talk about Synergy and screen-sharing, haven't tried it myself but it might be something to put thought into. Otherwise it'd be better to go buy a $5 monitor at Goodwill or something, like I did.
