Hi,

I purchased a refurbished PC off of ebay for £195 which works well for most of the stuff I do so I'm happy.

However some aspects are a little slow.

My current CPU is Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

2.40 ghz quad core.

My question is, will a Intel Duo 3.16ghz with 2 cores be faster than the quad core?

Thanks!

Only in single- or dual-threaded applications, where the per-core performance would be faster. If you're in a situation where you're using 3 or 4 threads, the Core 2 Quad is going to be faster. In fact, I'm guessing that you're considering the E8500, which is ranked at the same tier as your current Q6600.

What motherboard do you have? Depending on which one, you might be able to put a Core 2 Extreme Q9650/9770/9775 in there. They're also quad-core CPUs, are faster than your current one (3GHz for the 9650, 3.2GHz for the others), & would be a 2-tier upgrade for that CPU. But only if the motherboard can officially suppor them...

Thanks for answers,

Another question. When I want to run a certain software or game and it says minimum req a 3.2ghz processor. Will the quad core be classed as better than this and run it?

Thanks.

Motherboard is a Intel Q35

it would only if the game is able to take advantage of more then one core. if the game only accesses one core then you will need a CPU with that clockspeed
