Hi everyone!

I know that budget futureproof is almost an oxymoron, but I would like to squeeze as much performance as I can with my limited amount of money and pray my PC lasts me 7 years. I'm currently using a Lenovo Thinkpad T460s i7-6600U, but likewise, I want it to last me ~7 years (as my brother's old Thinkpad did), hence I'm looking to build a desktop to do most of my work/game on it and use my laptop only when I'm in my university.

I'm looking to casual game (Dota2 mainly, definitely not any PUBG kind of games), watch HD movies and multitask a lot, which involves opening and browsing ~100+ tabs (for research and youtube; yea I'm a bit crazy). Building a PC on my own has been on my bucketlist for a long long time, so I'm quite excited yet nervous and I really hope I don't screw this up big time. The OCD/ perfectionist in me wants everything to be well... Perfect.

My friend suggests that an i3-7100 @3.9GHz is good enough for me given that I don't do any video rendering. However, I am open to suggestions to break my bank a bit more to acquire an i5-7600K or even an i7-7700k (though I need a really good reason to splurge on this). Hoping to keep this build somewhat futureproof and upgrade part by part when necessary.

Approximate Purchase Date: By end of this month.

Budget Range: <$1500 (unless there is a good reason to exceed budget)

System Usage from Most Important to Least Important: Casual Gaming, Internet Browsing (Multitask, ~100+ tabs open), Watching/Streaming HD Movies, Work and Study :p

Are you buying a monitor: Yes

Parts to Upgrade: Yes

Do you need to buy OS: Might not (trying leech from university IT department)

Preferred Website(s) for Parts: No real preference, though I think it might not apply to me since I'm staying in Singapore. But might consider international shipping if cheaper than local dealers.

Location: Singapore ><

Parts Preferences: Heard Intel is better than AMD, so I guess Intel? But definitely open to suggestions and advice. No other preferences to other parts, except it has to be worth the money :p

Overclocking: Maybe

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: Haven't bought one

Additional Comments: Games wise, I mainly play Dota2.
And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: I don't have a desktop as of now, and I am looking to build one to reduce the workload on my Lenovo Thinkpad T460s (i7-6600U) laptop and make it last as long as possible (~7years). I also want to build one for the experience, and see for myself the difference between gaming/ performance/ work/ multitasking on my laptop (with Intel HD520 graphics) versus a decent desktop that has a dedicated GPU. Sorry if my requirements and budget are kinda vague. I'm really open to suggestions if they are worth the money.

Thank you so so so much for your advice and time!

Best Regards,
Lionel, a broke engineering student who wants to study medicine

PS: Anyone knows how to change my UserID? I signed up through my Facebook account and it used my email which I created in primary school (hence the 007 ><)

It depends on how regularly you wanna upgrade the PC. If you upgrade in every 1-2Yrs then i5 and GTX1060 will do fine(GTX1060 will not give 60fps even at 1080p in intense games). But if you plan on going for a good build which you expect to last for good 4-5Yrs without requirement of upgrade then GTX1080 and if for 7Yrs GTX1080Ti is best. I went with Ryzen because dx12 perform good with more number of cores and R7 1700 can be overclocked to 3.8GHz with stock cooler and 4GHz with good aftermarket cooler. Games in future will utilize more number of cores. Yes Intel has better single core performance. Intel is also increasing number of cores on its main stream platform. If you wait for 1-2months you will get 6C/12T Intel i7 Coffelake.

If...

Thanks so much for your input King Dranzer! Just wondering though, why Ryzen 7? Isn't it only 3GHz as compared to say an Intel Core i3-7100@3.9GHz (SGD$168)? I read that Dota 2 (and most games) and normal computer usage depend more on single-thread performance. I'm also not sure if I'll fully utilize the 8 cores of Ryzen 7. I have been looking at Intel Core i5-7500/7600K (SGD$297/$366) or if someone gives me an extremely good reason, an upgrade to an i7-7700K (SGD$527)

This is what I had come up with using help from userbenchmarks on the components' relative performance.

CPU: i3-7100 3.9GHz/3MB [$168]

Mobo: Gigabyte Z270-HD3 [$174]

GPU: (a) MSI GTX1050Ti AERO ITX 4GB OC [$239] | (b) MSI GTX1060 Afterburner 3GB OC [$329] | (c) MSI GTX1060 AERO ITX 6GB OC [$379]

RAM: (a) G.Skill 2400 CL15 8GB [$98] | (b) G.Skill RipJawsV 2400 CL15 2X8GB [$205] | (c) G.Skill RipJawsV 3000 CL15 2X8GB [$229]

SSD: Samsung 960 EVO M.2PCE 250GB [$199]

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200 2TB [$112]

PSU: Silverstone 650W ST65F-G Full Modular 80+Gold [$155]

Total: $1,145 - $1,416

I'm referring to this pricelist I got from an IT fair, it that helps. Someone PMed me that my above build needs a lot of tweaking. Thanks in advance once again!

Cheers,
Lionel

If you plan on utilizing it for 7Yrs one advise is to wait for 2-3 months add more budget to build make it SGD2300 and go for i7-8700K and GTX1080Ti build. Otherwise go for R7 1700 GTX1080Ti build if not able to increase budget get at-least. R7 1700 GTX1080 build. Or if you wanna save bit more then go for R5 1600.

Decision is yours.

Budget and Futureproof aren't a possible combination. But, if you are determined enough, you can find a way to finance the build you want to have. Just remember these phrases: "The power is yours!" - Captain Planet. "It's Morphin Time!" - The Power Rangers. "Only you can prevent forest fires" - Smokey the Bear. "The Force will be with you, always," - Obi Wan Kenobi. As long as you remember all that stuff, you should succeed.
