VPN through DD-WRT in front of wireless router?

I know nothing about networking and I'm wondering if my idea is possible.
My current network path is ATT U-Verse router and modem <---> Apple Airport extreme. I want to add a VPN to my configuration so that I don't have to run individual VPN clients on each device. Basically, I want my configuration to look like this ATT U-Verse <---> VPN box (DD-WRT router) <----> airport extreme. I'm hoping to use a DD-WRT router to provide the VPN functions.

Is this even possible?

Thanks!

That is the whole purpose of vpn it will translate the ip to one the vpn provider shares with many other people. The nat will in effect be done at the vpn providers router.

It likely makes little difference if you have the airport extreme running as a router or a AP when you have a vpn in the path. Most times the issue is game consoles but game console will have issues running behind vpn if they need to use UPnP or port mapping to function. That only applies to some games though most will have no issue running via a vpn.
That will work and the default configuration will force all traffic though it. You could bypass the vpn by connecting to the u-verse router for devices you did not want to use the vpn. Not sure how fast your internet connection is but be aware vpn (especially openvpn) put a lot of load on the vpn router cpu. It depends on the router doing the VPN. Just one of those things to be aware of when using vpn.

My internet speeds are 23 down 2 up. Would the DD-WRT router with the VPN have a NAT? Currently, my airport extreme handles DHCP and NAT for the network

Ok, that was helpful. I knew that a VPN changed your IP address but I didn't know about the NAT. You wouldn't happen to know how to get a VPN running on DD-WRT would you? I got pretty close to getting it to work but I can't get the VPN to work. If not you've been a huge help thanks!

The exact details depend on the vpn provider. DD-wrt has the ability to take a preconfigure script...i forget what it dd-wrt calls it. You just find the one for the vpn provider you want to use, update a couple things like your userid and password and paste it into the box and it configures the vpn for you.
