Cheap improvement on old build

What would be the cheapest upgrade on a 970A D3P MB with a HD6670 GPU, 4GB 1333 single stick RAM using a Phenom iix2 550 ? I want to keep the CPU and MB.

I suggest both a 4GB upgrade and a new rx550. The rx550 is 200% faster than your HD6670.

I would also suggest adding another 4GB of RAM and moving to an RX-560 or GTX-1050. I probably wouldn't go any higher than that for a GPU. Also, I know you said you want to keep your Phenom II 550 X2, but you may want to look for a Phenom II 955BE X4 if you can find one and your MoBo will support a 125W TDP, just for the extra two cores. Your more modern games will appreciate it, and as most will have to be NOS, or used, they should be pretty cheap.

The 550 probably unlocked to a quad which is about the same as the 955BE. A 960T thuban may be an ok upgrade for a cheap used on ebay. If you can uplock the quad to a 6 core they are great. Both of mine unlocked and faster one is hitting a very stable overclock of 3.72Ghz. The slower of the 2 took a bit more voltage keeping down to 3.3Ghz.
