Samsung 850 EVO 500GB Recognized in BIOS boot section, but not booting.

Shut down my pc today, came back to it a little while later and booted it up, only the screen showed "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". So I went straight to Google and people were saying i need to disconnect all drives then reconnect each one, one by one starting with the SSD, I tried this but even with only the SSD connected, it does not boot. So then I put the SSD onto my other computer and tried to boot it, it did not boot.

The odd thing about this is that when going into the BIOS the drive is clearly listen in the boot selection area. I also used a sata to usb converter for the SSD and it worked and showed all my files. Thinking it was a virus I scanned my drive with Malwarebytes, found a couple malware, removed them, tried to boot from it but it does not boot still.

I'm thinking the drive might need to be sent to Samsung as it is still under warranty, but I decided to ask on here before making such a drastic decision. If anyone can help me with my problem it would be much appreciated.

I have tried all 6 ports on the motherboard of my main pc, 4 on my htpc, and 13 different sata cables. The only way I can access the SSD is through a sata to usb converter which us not recognized as being a samsung verified drive with the samsung magician, meaning I cannot test it.

Well, that sucks. Guess I'll have to live without my pc for a while. Thanks for the help mate, gonna go ahead and contact samsung about this.

1. You obviously have a bootable functional PC at hand since you're able to communicate here on the forum. Is this the "problem" PC that doesn't boot with the Samsung SSD which I'm assuming is the normal boot drive in the "problem" PC? Explain this.

2. Your explanation of the problem you're experiencing is quite unclear. You indicate the system will not boot to the OS (what OS?) presumably installed on your SSD. Are you able to boot the system with ANOTHER drive that contains a functional OS?

3. In any event you're apparently able to connect the Samsung SSD as a SECONDARY drive. Have you tested the drive with Samsung's Magician program?

4. This problem occurred suddenly, i.e.,"out-of-the-blue"? You had no clue why this problem should have arisen?

5. You apparently connected the SSD as a USB external device and could access its data. Was the drive connected to the same PC with another drive (HDD?) performing as the boot drive or were you using another PC at the time?

6. What's the make/model of your motherboard? Is this a OEM machine or custom/self-built?

1. Mobile devices are able to access the forums, if you didn't know.

2. Unable to boot from only this drive, used different drive on the same build and it boots.

3. The ssd does not open when connected through a sata cable, therefore samsung magician will not work, as I've stated before.

4. Like I said in the OP I shut my pc down, about an hour later I try to boot it and it does not boot, no idea why.

5. Used my HTPC to open the drive via USB.

6. ASUS Z170-A self built.

Why do I get the feeling you're bring a bit hostile for no reason? I'm asking a question that has not offended anyone in any way, there really is no need to have an attitude, if it has offended you in some way, I am sorry and may I ask you to just move along? No need to reply to my question if I rile you up with my problem.

So you're indicating that when the SSD is installed as a SECONDARY drive in the system following the boot to the system with a functional drive you are not able to access its contents? The drive is neither listed in Device Manager nor in Disk Management? Is that correct?

If so, is there any way you can test the Samsung with the Magician program while it's installed as a USB external device or if possible, installed internally in another PC? Obviously we're trying to determine if you may be dealing with a defective drive.

When connecting the SSD into sata ports, no matter what port use, no matter what sata cable used, and no matter what pc used the computer does not boot. On my HTPC I connected it via sata cable and tried to boot the main drive on my htpc, not the ssd in question but a different one and it did not boot. So the ssd in quesion is preventing any drive to boot.

I decided it might havesome corrupted windows files so I formatted it and reinstalled windows, currently installing drivers and will update if that fixed it for me.

Good. Will look forward to your next post re this subject.

It's quite conceivable, of course, that the SSD is defective. I'm always initially a bit suspicious of that conclusion based upon my fairly extensive experience with Samsung SSDs - particularly over the past four years or so. I've worked with, or had occasion to check out, at least one hundred or so Samsung SSDs over that period, and aside from DOAs, I've never encountered a single defective Samsung SSD. Problems that we (or others) had encountered that at first blush appeared to be due to a defective drive always turned out to be due to something else other than a defective Samsung SSD.

Admittedly that's my personal experience - nothing more.

Well, I guess a fresh install of windows fixed it. Restarted my PC like 20 times already and the drive boots up like new. Guess there really were some corrupted files on the drive which kept it from booting. Thanks for your help mate! Sorry if I seemed a bit moody in my replies, currently preparing for hurricane Irma and out of the blue my PC decides to not boot.. Really did not need this while I'm so busy, which is why I got worked up over the smallest things. Again, thank you for your help. If you didn't reply I probably would already be packaging my drive for shipment. Saved me a lot of pain being away from my beloved SSD.
