I have a ASROCK z87 formula oc mobo
Intel i7-4790K 4G LGA 1150
32 G memory

I purchased a Samsung 960 PRO M.2. It is mounted on a ASUS Hyper M.2 X4 mini. That is inserted in a PCIe slot on the mobo.

IMPORTANT: I do NOT want to boot from this drive at this time. I just want to use it as a drive D, E etc.

I can see the drive in Device Manager but no where else to format partition etc.. It has the latest driver installed according to Win 10.

Device Manager information:

Disk 7
Type: unknown
Status: not initialized
Partition Style: Not Applicable
Capacity: 488386 MB
Unallocated Space: 0
Reserve Space: 0

What are my next steps?

Thanks.

Solution
First thanks to everyone who contributed. After a good night's sleep I went back through Disk Manager and found the drive and formatted it. It seems to work fine now. Finding it was not as simple as it sounds as I have 9 (now 10) drives some having volumes spanning multiple physical drives. DM does not represent these well. Also when I found the 960 it was a no name (until I went into proprieties) 488GB drive. It really was the error message in Disk Manager that through me off as I went down that rabbit trail trying to solve that issue. Anyway that's my excuse. Again thanks for your help.

Have you tried Disk Manager, right click the windows start button and select disk management from the list.
From there you should be able to create a partition and format the drive. Sorry if you already tried that, but you didn't say.

No problem on the question. I'm sure the solution is something simple. I did try this...In device manager when I right click I can:

Update Driver
Disable Device
Uninstall the Device
Scan for Hardware Changes
Properties

If I click on Properties there is no option (i can find) to partition or format. In properties I can populate volume information which I included above.

FURTHER UPDATE
In Device Manager I checked under Storage Controllers>>Properties>>Events
I found an error message: Device Not Started (secnvme)

I'm in way over my head in the information I just typed below but I hope this helps.

In the information dialog it said:
\VEN_144D&DEV_A804&SUBSYS_A801144D&RE_00\4&3ea651a&0&009 had a problem starting

Driver Name oem29.inf

Thanks for the information. I had installed the Samsung drivers. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. The erroror information above came from the Storage Controller section of Device Manager. Just to be sure I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers with the same result. As for Disk Manager, the drive does not show up in any listing I found so I cannot format/partition the drive.

Sorry couldn't let this grammatical error go: It really was the error message in Disk Manager that THREW (not through) me off as I went down that rabbit trail trying to solve that issue. Anyway that's my excuse. Again thanks for your help.

Good result. Disk manager is often the place people either get stuck or are unaware of completely. It's one of those things, if we were there looking over your shoulder it could have been fixed in a couple of minutes but doing it like this is a lot harder on both sides. I had a feeling it would be there somewhere.
