Hello All!

Long time lurker (love the community here), first time poster (hope this thread is in the right spot!)

I picked most of my parts for this build (aside from the parts I already had from the previous computer) by reading various threads on this site comparing different parts - so it's been a long time coming, but THANK YOU for the help I've already gotten here!

And I apologize ahead of time for the length of the post, I try to be succinct whenever I can but also like to give all potentially relevant information (it's a horrible combination).

CURRENT/BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Parts
Here is my current build - built in late 2015 - early 2016 (a few minor differences will be noted below):
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HnYJKZ

The RAM, NON Solid state drive, and optical drive were all cannibalized from my previous. off the rack HP rig (HP Pavilion HPE-h8-1230), not 100% sure I found the exact parts on PC picker, but should be close enough:
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03360575

There is also a memory card reader (which doesn't seem to work right, but I'm not too worried about it for now, mostly worried about gaming): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00RKVCLNG/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I believe I have a total of 6 tower fans, 3 intake, 3 exhaust, pushing/pulling generally up and back (2 intake on the front lower and 1 on the side, 2 exhaust on the top and 1 on the back)

Usage
I am currently using this for 2 things:
Gaming - examples of games I'm playing, MMO's, FPS, RPG - Overwatch, Fallout 4, The Division, Planetside 2, Eve Online, Destiny 2
Character modeling (and hopefully soon animation) using ZbrushCore, (hopefully upgrading to full Zbrush in the not too distant future), Blender, sketchup, etc, me and a few friends are starting work (albeit slowly since we all have day jobs) on app/videogame design and I am the only artist/designer for the time being.

MOVING FORWARD:

From what I've gathered from talking to some of my more computer saavy friends, they generally all recommend me upgrading my RAM first, as it's not the best, and is in a weird configuration (2 sticks of 4gb and a single stick of 2, this is what came out of my off the shelf HP tower listed above)

I mostly hear and read 8 and 16 GB are the "minimum" recommended, and that 32 isn't worth it yet (although based on my CG work/rendering, maybe??), any recommendations on what specifically to upgrade to based on my expected uses would be much appreciated.

Unless someone would recommend something else first, that is likely going to be my FIRST upgrade, but I'm not sure where else to go from there... CPU? Graphics Card? (god forbid... motherboard (x_x) )

Summary

I'm not looking to break the bank on any of these parts, so try not to recommend the TIP-TOP of the line... but it could possibly be a month or more (maybe more, a black friday/cyber monday deal, an xmas present to myself, etc) if a really good part would be worth saving up for and spending a little more on, or if there's been news of an expected product release that would either be worth it or would cause older products to lower in price for me to grab.

Not planning on doing a complete overhaul, but I know my rig overall is likely somewhat out-of-date/borderline ancient with the speed computers evolve and I haven't been able to keep up much with new releases so I'm not entirely up on what's out there.

Any recommendations on what needs upgrading the most, what should still be good, and/or what to upgrade TO would be MUCH appreciated. Thank you!

Well, first of all; I think RAM could be good to upgrade first. And, as of right now, i wouldn`t recommend over 16GB of it, as it can get pretty expensive, and i feel like it`s just not worth the extra price. Secondly, after that, i would seriously suggest trying to upgrade that CPU. It is a pretty outdated AMD one, and i think the ryzen 5 or 7 scheme of CPUs will be excellent for your gaming/work, as it`s extra cores come really in handy. Of course, upgrading the CPU would mean the motherboard would have to be switched out as well, and there, i really don`t know too well if you should use the B350 or X370, really depends on what level you want to overclock, and how many features you want, so maybe if that`s a plan, you could say what...

Hope this is not TOO unorganized, and hope it helps! :D
