Hi,

I had an external hard drive (Toshiba) and just this week it's not working well.
So here's what happened...

1. When I used it on Computer/Laptop, both having hard time recognizing it. It loads too slow sometimes causing my desktop to freeze. Still it work tho too long you need to wait.

2. When I transfer files from computer/laptop to external it works perfectly fine but when I'm going to transfer files from external to computer/laptop there it goes again; Freeze/Lag/Loading...

So I tried asking my friend and read some reviews how to fix it. I come to decide to defrag my disk and so this happen. But I'm not sure if it was successful because I fall asleep while waiting on it. I slept with my laptop beside on me. So I think I might moved on it. So here's what happened later on.

I unplug my external hard drive and plugged it again it shows in my computer as Local Disk (F) not its name and also I can't see the available space on it. But when I check the Device Manager it shows my External Drive with its name Toshiba. I even tried hdd regenerator and found out it has a lot of bad sectors.

So guys, will I be able to fix this one? Please need your help. All my important files were on it. My cousin suggested me to change it circuit board. But I hope you might have some different option.

Thank you so much :)

Solution
If you have important files on the drive, programs like hdd regenerator are only likely to make it worse. It is not the PCB and if you were to change the PCB, you would need to move the ROM chip which is unique to the drive. If you damage the ROM chip, then it is game over. The steps I recommend you follow are:

1. If the data is important to you, contact a data recovery professional before further damage is caused. Every time you power the drive on, it is probably getting worse and will eventually cross the line between recoverable and fatal head crash

[Assuming that you are 100% sure that professional data recovery is out of the question]

2. try a different USB cable
3. remove the hard drive from the USB enclosure and connect...

2. try a different USB cable
3. remove the hard drive from the USB enclosure and connect directly via a SATA connection (assuming it isn't a native USB PCB)
4. try to get a full sector-by-sector clone of the drive with ddrescue (Guide to ddrescue)
5. if you cannot get a clone or encounter a lot of read errors, you are best to stop and rethink #1
6. if you can get a reasonably clean clone of the drive, you can then attempt file recovery from the stable clone drive and save the data out to another healthy formatted drive.

As for professional data recovery services, it is always best to explore your options and call around before sending your drive out. Here is my list of labs I find that are affordable, reputable and very good with data recovery.

Recovery Force
Data Medics
Data Savers
PC Image
Data Busters
Mind Merge

Hi, @DR_Luke,
Thank you for your reply with regards to my problem.
Just wanna ask, is formatting my external hard drive would solve the problem?
Thanks

To fix the drive, very unlikely. To recovery the data, definitely not. To make things worse, definitely.
