Like month ago my computer started to freeze after some time while im playing in all kind of games (old one/new one). First for a split of a second i see colorful bright screen, then all freezing, with distorted sound only, and i can't do nothing, excepting reset the whole system. I did basic fixes like updating drivers, uninstall suspicious AV, change Framework to previous version etc, but it turned out worthless effort. I've never had that kind of issue. I have Windows 7, Nividia GeFocre 9600 GT, Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.00GHz, 4 Giga RAM.

Sometimes I'm receiving the message from Windows:

Solution
Most likely it's a bad video card, test with another known good card and see if the issue is gone then. Could be a driver error or overheating, but seeing the age of the system, it's probably a bad video card.

After that long things can collect a lot of dust and fluff.
Start by opening the case and cleaning all of the collected dust from the motherboard, heatsinks, grills and (especially) the processor and graphic card fans and heatsink. It's best take the heatsink and fan off the processor for thorough cleaning and clean off the old heatsink paste and replace it with new good stuff when reassembling. That'll tell you if it is a faulty component (it'll crash again after cleaning)- THAT is when you follow hang-the-9 's advice- otherwise you might be just buying things for the sake of it and it may not even sort your problem.
