I want to buy a 4TB WD black internal for my optiplex 745 on Win7 just for storage and use GPT to partition it. I'd buy an external, but the affordable ones use lower end drives.
I am on bios 2.3.1 but would reluctantly move to the last (2.6.6) if that's all I need to do.
Can anyone tell me if this older motherboard can support GPT and if there are other limitations beyond that and the bios? Reluctant about the bios update because if there's a chance it can brick, it would be my luck that it would happen to me.
If I had any real budget at all, i'd buy a newer PC.
Thanks very much in advance,
Bill

Solution
1. Assuming your present PC with the Win 7 OS is functioning properly, there shouldn't be problem internally installing a 4 TB HDD and partitioning it with the GPT partitioning scheme as long as the drive is utilized for storage and not intended as a boot drive. I assume your PC has an available bay for installing this HDD.

2. If Dell has indicated the updated BIOS you mention should be installed has any connection with installing a GPT-partitioned secondary storage drive, then install the BIOS update. If there's NO relevance to this issue don't update. Leave things well enough as they are.
