The generation of the standard that the router complies with. IEEE 802.11 is the standard that specifies WiFi, and amendments were designated e.g. 802.11a, 802.11b. When they ran out of letters, they rolled around to 'aa', 'ab', 'ac' etc.

ac is a pretty new standard that should be good for anyone however some ad routers are coming out but they are really expensive
