ASUS M5A97 Stuck at Splash/Post Screen

At first the PC would get stuck at ASUS splash screen, I'd reset, and it would boot fine to Windows 7 64 bit. Now suddenly it doesn't matter if I reset, sometimes it sticks at the "blinking hyphen"/not-DOS-anymore stage, mostly stuck at ASUS post. It doesn't matter what keyboard I try, I cannot access BIOS (F2 or DEL).

Far as I know this started only after I updated some kind of mobo drivers & BIOS through Windows Update? Stupid.

Sometimes when I turn it on the mobo makes a single, normal beep.

== Tried ==
- Seagate HDD diagnostic, long gen, smart scan, all fine (back when it would load after reset)
- CLRTC jumper reset for CMOS
- Using Windows 7 install DVD disc. Made loud running noise, didn't boot.

Plan to try:
manual CMOS removal after I run down to the store for a Phillips head because the GPU is blocking the way.
Removal of one RAM stick
Unplug primary HDD w/Windows install disc

== Specs - CyberPower w/warranty long expired ==
ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0
CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0GHZ EIGHT-CORE RETAIL
HDD: 500 GB CAVIAR BLUE SATA III / 7200 RPM
HDD: WD 1 TB CAVIAR BLUE SATA III 6.0 GB/ 7200 RPM
RAM: 4 GB DDR3/ 1600 MHZ MEMORY
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 760 2GB GDDR5 PCI-E 3
PSU: CoolerMaster 700W, RS-700-ACAA-B1

Nagging suspicion this is mobo or PSU because of other posts I've seen with similar issues despite noticing this only after updating. I do not have an extra PSU.

Any suggestions? Appreciated.

Sorry? What date?

Unfortunately with IT friend's help it appears to be the 1TB storage drive. Even in a different port or with a different SATA cable it locks up boot. Without it plugged in the computer runs fine. So now I'm going to try a HDD enclosure with USB on the offchance I can get my data...

Thanks. It turns out I was wrong, PC is STILL not booting even with the secondary HDD disconnected. I think it's the motherboard but I will have to examine tomorrow for bad capacitors when I'm less frustrated with the whole thing. (I don't suspect the RAM or PSU, but I could still try removing RAM.)

Thanks for your responses, scout, but can you please type in full sentences? I'm having trouble understanding everything you're saying. Like what "wd" is?

Anyway, the 500gig (c drive) is max 4 years old, same as all the other parts of the PC. I have yet to test it other than that previous Seagate diagnostic that passed. I assume if I disconnect it the mobo will tell me I have no boot device (but that's better than frozen!).

wd is for western digital so you dont have seagate hdd in system and yes if you disconnect hdd system should tell no boot device found did you put cak the cmos battery on the board as it should also look at page 1-17 of board manual the cmos reset process is there after this could you try to use the second pci-e slot for the gpu since you dont have internal chipset on board .

Yup, I used the manual's guide on moving then replacing the CMOS jumper, which reset the BIOS and I was able to boot for the first time in days -- but I had also disconnected the 1Tb drive by that point. After that one time, though, I couldn't boot. I haven't removed the CMOS itself yet, as I figured the jumper was enough to erase that memory.

I believe the second PCI express slot is taken up by the Wireless adapter, not sure if they'll fit in swapped position. Guess I don't need the Wireless adapter for the tests, though.

Okay, this is pretty damning: Just tested with both HDD unpluggeed. Still stuck at ASUS splash screen.

By the way, there's no date on this screen, it's just the ASUS logo with "Please press DEL or F2 to enter UEFI BIOS setting".
