Hi all! This is my first post so I apologize in advance if it is in the wrong place!

I'm having trouble deciding which GPU I should upgrade to and was hoping for some insight. I have scoured the forums as well as a fair amount of Googling and cannot find a concise answer.

Here is my current build:

MB: ASUS Z-97E LGA 1150
OS: Windows 10 Home 64
CPU: Intel i5 4690k @ 3.5ghz (OC @ 4.2)
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 2gb (EVGA)
RAM: 2x8gb DDR3 G.Skill TridentX 1600
HD: WD 1TB SATA 7200 rpm 6GB/s 64MB cache
PS: EVGA SuperNova 750w
LC: CoolerMaster Seidon 240M
SC: Asus Xonar DGX 5.1
NC: TP-Link TG-3468 PCI-E
Case: CoolerMaster HAF 932 Advanced
Display: ASUS VG278HV 27" 144 Hz 1MS (GTG) 1920 x 1080

Current performance: I can play most games that are 2-3+ years old in ultra/max settings and get 80+ FPS. However, newer games such as DOOM and Witcher 3 need to played in medium-ish settings to maintain 40-80 FPS.

Desired performance: I have a 144 hz monitor and would like to be able to play any game at ultra/max settings at 120+ FPS. (I am considering VR/3D gaming at some point and possibly upgrading to a 2k/4k monitor when prices go down.)

Question: Which GPU would be able to give me the desired performance but wouldn't be complete overkill given my lower resolution?

Eventually I will upgrade my CPU to an i7 and my HD to a SSD (and maaaybe my monitor for a 2k one at some point) , but I think the GPU should be the first to change, especially since it only has 2gb of VRAM. Also I should note that I've tried using EVGA's GPU overclocking software and cannot run Overwatch without screen distortion/artifacting if I set the GPU clock above +62mhz and the Mem clock above +11mhz, so overclocking on this card doesn't seem to be an option.

Can anyone help me figure this out or give me a recommendation? Thanks guys!

Solution
For 120+FPS. You'd want a GTX 1080 as a minimum. Although your i5-4690K will hold you back in some games. At 4K the i5 won't matter so much as the GPU will limit FPS. For 4K/VR gaming the GTX 1080 is the minimum good GPU but the GTX 1080 Ti is preferred.
