i54690k OC to 4.0GHz
MSI Z97 G45 Motherboard
GTX 970 4GB
16GB RAM
1TB HDD, 2TB HDD
Windows 7 64 bit

The freezes appear to occur randomly, but more frequently while I am playing games. However, it has happened while on the desktop or in chrome. Often times, but not always, I lose connection to the internet while my PC is frozen. There is no indication of the freeze prior to it happening. When it occurs, My screen instantly freezes and I instantly lose all sound. They typically last for about one minute.

The only change recently made to my PC was that I had to have Bradford and McAfee installed on my computer as per my university's policies. I suspected this to be the problem, but after stopping their services (not uninstalling them) I played a game of PUBG and suffered the screen freeze and time out.

I have also been monitoring my temps and they seem to be fine even under load (GPU ~60 and CPU ~50). I used MSI Afterburner to measure this. I haven't cleaned my PC in a month maybe, but it isn't that dusty and the temps are fine. I would clean but I don't have compressed air at the moment. I have the most recent NVIDIA drivers and Windows updates.

My CPU was previously OC'ed at 4.3GHz and has been for the past few years. I've never had any issues but maybe its been pushed too far too long? I dont OC my GPU or RAM. I reduced the OC after the problem started but it has persisted.

My RAM in brand new and has no errors. I had 2 4GB sticks just last week and one of them died. I thought this was causing the issue, yet it remains with the new RAM. The RAM seems to have coincidentally died after I got McAfee and Bradford installed unless these programs somehow killed it.

A side note: I was recording when one of the crashes occurred and watching back the footage during the frozen period, the recording has no audio and is just a still image for the duration of the freeze, just as it appears on my monitor (idk if this is of any significance).

I'm kinda at a loss for what to do right now. I appreciate any and all help! Thanks.

Check all your drivers make sure there the latest. If you dont know which to update driver booster free version can check to see which are old. Only use it to find which you need as it does tend to find alpha version you shouldn't use. Its in the popular downloads in the link.

Check your bios to see if needs updated. https://us.msi.com/Motherboard/support/Z97-G45-GAMING

Maybe a windows service you dont need may need disabled. Use blackvipers safe desktop to figure out which you dont need.

The only one that fits the time bracket for my last freeze is:

7009 Service Control Manager System

This is under the category Error. There are 3 other Service Control Manager error rows with varying numbers of occurrences in the past 24 hours and week bit this one (7009) was the only one in the past hour. The numbers for the others are: 7000, 7011, 7026.

The only Critical error I have is:

41 Kernel-Power System Task category: (63)

However none of them have happened in the past 24 hours. I have 6 of this error in the past 7 days.

Nothing strange going on in task manager. CPU is at ~2% and RAM is ~4GB. No processes I don't recognize.
I'm installing Avast and Malwarebytes right now. I'm typically pretty careful, but maybe I goofed. Thanks for the response. I'll update after I scan.

Oh...well 41(63) is a hardware error or something about the drivers for said hardware. Having it 6 times in past week isn't great.
However, if it's not showing up anywhere around the freeze times it might not be related. Or it might as id 7000 is
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-security/event-id-7000/336eb3aa-93ef-4b24-bd3d-7ffe20694463?auth=1

and that might be related. Maybe monitor drivers? Graphics drivers?
Do the sys repair, just in case there's an issue with registry or with one of windows drivers,

Otherwise see if your monitor manufacturer offers drivers for their monitors. Also if there is an issue using a specific connection with a specific card/monitor like using hdmi with a particular card and monitor model. It's rare but I know I've run across a few threads like this.

Thanks for the input! I think the Critical error was because my bios was configured for 8GB 1866MgHz RAM but I had in my PC 16GB 1600MgHz RAM. Maybe? I'll try reinstalling my video drivers and doing a system repair after I do this virus scan. Thanks again!

Hiya again! So I ran the scans and got one positive from Avast and none from Malwarebytes. I think it was a false positive but I got rid of it anyway. Any other suggestions as to what I should do?
