Is my CPU at the proper low performance temperature?

Perhaps I am not using the clearest words, but I posted recently about running my new build without a heatsink or thermal paste. I've installed both, now, and my CPU was running about 45 degrees in BIOS/Setup. That seems high, as I've seen people post about 30-40 Celsius being the proper range for non-intensive/idle systems.

It is possible I applied the thermal paste incorrectly, as it didn't seem to smear all across the CPU. If this is the case, I'm willing to re-do it. If anyone can give me instructions (if it comes to be necessary) that would be helpful.

I appreciate any help.

I'm a noob. This is my first non-prebuilt. Would you explain how I would find what you're asking? Also, no rush on answering, as I seem to be within operating range. I'm just worried about on-going exposure to higher temperatures and how the system will react when I start doing more intense things.

BIOS is not idle; 45°C in BIOS is absolutely is fine. Stress test your CPU and tell us what the temperatures are. If you still are concerned, then you should provide more info, e.g., what CPU, motherboard, cooler, etc. and what application is used to check the temperatures in the OS.

A program like Prime95 is safe; the worst that should happen is throttling. That's what happens when a liquid cooler pump fails; this is a rather common issue and it doesn't cause CPU failures.

As long as I don't plan on overclocking, I'll be fine, right? I don't ever plan on doing it..
