Is it normal that my new core i3 build is terrible ?

I recently built a CPU (My first build) and I'm pretty disappointed in the performance.
Here is the hardware:



-Ballistix Sport LT 4GB Single DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) DIMM 288-Pin - BLS4G4D240FSE (Red)

-Intel BX80677I37100 7th Generation Core i3-7100 Processor

-Gigabyte GA-H110M-A LGA1151 Intel H110 Micro ATX DDR4 Motherboard

-EVGA 500 W1, 80+ WHITE 500W, 3 Year Warranty, Power Supply 100-W1-0500-KR

-LG Electronics 24X Internal SATA without Software, Super Multi with M-Disc Support, DVDRW, Black

-Western Digital 1TB 3.5" 7200 RPM SATA III 64MB Cache Desktop Hard Drive (Blue)

-Rosewill Challenger S Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case

-Gigabyte Radeon RX 550 Gaming OC 2GB Graphic Cards GV-RX550GAMINGOC-2GD

-Windows 10 64x

I can hardly multi-task (Having a few browsers open makes the whole system choppy. Any programs cause lag), let alone play a game like CIV-5 or even small Indi games on even the lowest graphics.

So I'm just wondering if this is normal and I picked the pieces wrong, or if something isn't right. Thanks.

Yes. Two reasons. First, you have an HDD, not an SDD. If that wasn't bad enough, you have 4GB of RAM, which probably 95% is used by the OS.

If you want to improved the performance, buy another stick of the same exact RAM. Second, buy an SSD.

But most of your problems will disappear if you get more RAM.

Ahh I see. I didn't know about the difference between 64 and the other version. This is just the copy the guy sold me by default when I asked him for a windows 10 disc. Thank's a lot.

*sigh of relief* just ram, I may not have wasted any money but it was kind of expensive compared to pre builds in this price range with i5s or 7s. Like

It will smooth out. 8gb should help, but as soon as you can get an SSD as your boot drive. I had to reuse an old hard drive when I rebuilt my system with a ryzen 5 1600(I had put my old SSD in a laptop for my wife). And games ran great, but opening programs and things were slow.

Just got a Samsung Evo 960 nvme drive as a boot drive last weekend, and wow what a difference. From pressing the power button it now is 22 seconds until I land on the desktop.

22 seconds sounds beautiful. I'll do that God willing, when I'm ready to drop another however much an SSD costs. One question ->> How big a drive should I get ? I would really prefer spending the least amount of money as possible, so if it would work with a small drive as the boot drive with the big HDD in the back for storage or whatever, that would be great.

Some guys like 120gb drives because you can get them as a normal SSD for just over 50 bucks. For the Samsung nvme drive I have, it was 115 for a 250gb. I think you can get a regular 240gb ssd for about 80ish.

Difference between the nvme drive and an SSD is I think the nvme is like 4 or 5 times faster. But even a normal SSD will begin much faster than a standard hard drive. As I said, some guys go with a 120gb as a boot drive. I personally like at least 240-250 as a boot drive to give me a little breathing room for the os and to install a game or two I might play a lot. But then use the normal hard drive for storing everything else.

:D Perfect, I like your thinking about having a bit of extra room and the extra speed is nice. Definitely going to get the samsung.
