computer wont power up for more then a second

i have a best buy asus gaming pc that is a few years old. i recently decided to build a new pc. after buying all the parts except
the processor which i couldn't afford yet, a friend told me that my current processor should work with the new motherboard. so i took the cpu out of my old computer and tried to install it in the new motherboard. it didn't fit. too old i guess. so i didn't think much of it and put it back in my old computer, reapplied thermal paste, put the fan back on and tried to turn it back on. it powers up for a second, fans spin and the hard drive clicks then it just powers down again. i have checked all the cords, pulling them out and re inserting to make sure, i made sure the chip was back in correctly and that none of the pins where bent, took out and replaced the RAM, still nothing. this computer worked just fine for 3 years and still has all its factory default parts. what am i missing? and how do i go about fixing this?

EDIT: I gave up on this. this thread contains no real useful info. sorry and thanks to those that tried.

i cant power up the computer to get its specs. and i am not really computer literate enough to just eyeball them. its all asus stuff tho. its a store bought pre built asus gaming pc from best buy. the parts are all generic far as i know.

EDIT: i have decided to give up on this computer and just save the 330$ i need for a processor for the new rig i am building. idk whats wrong with the old one but it seems to be a lost cause without being able to get more information on its parts. i dont have the package it came in or anything with that kind of information anymore as i have owned the PC for about 3 years now and did not think i would need it anymore. if a moderator would like to lock or archive this post go ahead. thanks for the...

We will pray that nothing on the mainboard socket was damaged when attempting to put in the incompatible CPU...; I'd start my inspection there. (Also, make sure cpu fan is plugged into correct header, and that CPU power header is plugged in from PSU to mainbaord...

YOu may disconnect all hard/optical drive SATA and power cables, and even superfulous USB headers to rule them out from the equation if no change....

i tried taking out the GPU and tried booting with only one ram stick. it still only powers up for a split second. idk whats going on. the LED light on the motherboard still comes on when its plugged in and the fan spins for a second when i try to boot it so its getting power and i think its trying to boot.

to clarify: there are no new parts in this issue. i took the processor out of my old computer and it turned out to be imcompatible with the NEW motherboard. i did not try to force the CPU into the new motherboard because i realized it was not going to work the moment i set the CPU in the socket and no matter which way it was set it would not lay flat. so i tried to reassmble the old computer to use until i can get a new processor for the new motherboard. the only thing that was done to the old computer was the removal of the fan to get to the CPU and then taking the CPU out. since i couldn't get it to power back up properly i also took out the GPu so it does not get damaged (i need it for the new computer until i can afford a newer one) and the removal of the wifi card because i use a cord anyway.

BTW this has been a real lesson to me. i do not plan to try to assemble my new computer myself. i am going to take all the parts (which are all still sealed except for the motherboard which i put back in its plastic wrap to keep from getting dusty) to somebody that actually know what they are doing with them. i just want my old computer to work until then. thanks for the responses. :)
