I've been using the same rig for the past few years without upgrading many things in it. I decided I should replace a few outdated parts due to lag in a few games I play. I'm just not sure which parts should go first.

Motherboard: Biostar - TA790GXE 128M
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 955
GPU: GeForce GTX 560
SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB
and 4gb of DDR2

I'm assuming I should start by getting more ram and replacing my processor first, I'm just not sure what parts would be compatible with what I have.

Solution
I dont think increasing the ram will improve much performance ,may be it can reduce the lags but no big improvement also u have to spend couple of dollars on ddr2 which will be useless in case u upgrade soon .Better buy rysen3 or intel 4560 which costs less along with the motherboard probably like 70$ for mobo and 150$ for processor
uh... new PC mate... definitely new PC, that rig is not worth upgrading...
the SSD is still fine though
if u're on a tight budget, u can leave out the GPU for later upgrade
get something from the new gens nowdays like Ryzen 3 / the Kabylake's "budget flagship" G4560
pair it with DDR4 RAM, a decent PSU, and a HDD to store more games
if the budget allows, go with a new GPU too like 1050ti / even the 1060 3 GB if u can find it at a good price

PS: u can try to sell your old PC for extra budget
