multi gpu setup. To blow or not to blow?

Building a rig for photogrammetry, 1950x cpu and 4 nvidia gpus (1080ti's), I'm planning on using an MSI armor motherboard and it looks like I'll only fit blower type cards in there - not enough space for 2.5 or 3x width cards. Does that seem to be a fair appraisal?

Solution
if its cuda cores u r after, then yes, multiple 1080ti seems to be the best bet. the 1080ti was launched as the last card in the product lineup. so even though the 11 series or 20 series will be released in the beginning of the next year, it will be around mid 2018 that u will most likely see a successor of the 1080ti.
on the otherhand, if u r after fp16 performance, make no mistake, tesla p100 or k80 is the way to go.
Although it has room for 4 cards, only 2 will work in sli. Dunno if are able to utilize ur cards individually. Are you sure you need 4 1080ti in the first place? Any other alternates like the Nvidia tesla p100 or k80? Look for the monstrous corsair obsidian 900d chassis. And a supernova p2 1600w psu? And yes, a blower type is the best choice to manage heat in the case. Although a custom loop watercooling can also help. The thermaltake tower 900 is another case to house all that in.

Thanks for your response, SLI is not required as the software just requires multiple gpus/cuda cores and does not utilise SLI. Any gpu from GTX970 onwards will work, but the more cuda cores the better, so 1080 ti is the current best (if expensive) approach using gaming cards. I have just been reading that the 2080 (or 1180, depending on which blog you read) is potentially due for release anytime between now and March next year so I might hold off on the GPU for now and see what happens with those release dates. I agree that the blower configured cards will be the most suitable, having done more reading on the subject.
