Computer BSODs when using 2 sticks of RAM in correct configuration

On my motherboard, if I understand correctly, I am meant to have the RAM sticks installed in slots 1 and 3 or slots 2 and 4. Whenever I put both 8GB sticks in this configuration, I either get a blue screen or the PC doesn't boot. I have tried using each individual stick on its own in slot 1 or 2 and the system works fine, just with less RAM obviously.

Recently I tried installing both sticks of RAM into slots 1 and 2 (a non optimal configuration) and the PC, although failing to boot a few times, does seem to run fine and be stable.

I have tried updating my BIOS, reinstalling windows and playing around with XMP settings.

I have a friend coming over with some of his RAM this coming saturday to see if we have similar issues with his.

Is this likely to be an issue with the RAM itself or something else?

Here are my system specs:
CPU: Intel i7 7700k
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 1060 6GB
Motherboard: MSI Z270
RAM: 2 x 8GB
SSD: 256GB
HDD: 1TB

Msi Z270 M5 or M7? I checked those two and that kit is on their memory QVL list for both, it should work fine. I would try running memtest86 on the individual sticks and see if it comes back with any errors, you may have gotten a bad stick.

Other things to try, if that mobo has some kind of memory default button like mem ok on asus boards push it, Not too familiar with msi boards. Clear the CMOS, then try agin with both sticks in a proper config. Update the bios. In that order.

Using slots 1 and 2 means the memory will only operate in single channel mode, but that's better than nothing.

None, of this worked unfortunately, currently just running the system on one RAM stick, I'll probably just wait for Saturday to try out my friend's RAM
