I want to do a fresh install of Windows 7 (current OS) on my Acer TMP645-M-5609. I have obtained the official recovery discs from Acer, but I do not have an optical drive. I tried burning the disc image onto a usb drive, but this won't work with either the "system disc" (I'm supposed to start the computer using this one) or any of the "recovery discs" (3 of these). I also got an external dvd drive (connects via usb) from some dude on Craigslist, which may be too old for my computer to even recognize. When I reboot the computer, I press F12 to select the drive from which to boot, and I do so, and am prompted to press any key to restart. When I do this, Windows loads as normal.
This happens with any of the iso files on my usb stick.
this happens with any of the four discs in the external optical drive.
the external drive is recognized in the boot drive menu.
I know i have done a clean install of windows 7 on this machine, but it was a couple of years ago and i have no memory of the procedure it took.
i have my bios set to legacy, and all of the usb drives are listed before the hard drives or anything else.
alt-F10 does nothing.
I press f12 to get into boot menu, and f2 to get into bios settings.

Any advice?

Don't do legacy bios. Now, you mention you tried to do this with usb but did you make the usb bootable first?

It is odd it won't boot from external dvd if it's recognized in bios. Did you try altering the boot sequence in bios to put the external dvd first? Like, not selecting manually when starting, but have it automatically set up in bios?
Also, unless I'm much mistaken, old windows version keys were saved on mobo too. So just putting in a regular win 7 install disc should work fine (or win7 usb install drive). You can download (or download in advance on a usb or something) all the drivers for your mobo off acer's support page.
Before you do any of this though, log into your microsoft account...

Before you do any of this though, log into your microsoft account and associate your windows key with your account. If something goes wrong, you can always use it to activate the windows version post install.
