Hello fam,

Just so you know I do not know much about computers. Recently bought one for gaming but it doesn't quite meet my expectations, lots of fps issues and what not.

AMD FX(tm)-6300 Six-Core Processor
8.0 GB ram
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950- Dedicated Video RAM 2 GB
CPU SPEED
3.5 GHz
Manufacturer Product
MSI 760GM-P23(FX) (MS-7641) Version 3.0

My buddy said upgrade graphics card (GPU) and the CPU? Not sure which to do first and what products will run with my system.

Thanks,
CapnQ

Solution
strongest CPU that can fit into your mobo is the FX-9590 (and this guy here, perform pretty much on par with my i5 2400, in terms of single core and quad core performance, while consuming almost 2.5x more wattage)

GTX 950 but don't expect that u can max out everything with it on 1080p, especially paired with that CPU
(if u only play e-sport title, this won't matter)

i hope that rig didn't cost u too much :(

honestly, i wouldn't really upgrade this rig, i rather sell it and then build a budget Ryzen build.... but if u insist:

for CPU upgrade, i already mention it above
for GPU upgrade, it really depends on your PSU, your case, and the CPU upgrade u're...

for GPU upgrade, it really depends on your PSU, your case, and the CPU upgrade u're going to go with... it could be anywhere from 1050ti to 1080 supposedly (i want to suggest the 1060 6 GB / 1070, but the price is pretty volatile nowdays, unless u can get a good rebate for it, don't buy it)
so u might want to consider the either the 1050ti / 1060 3 GB (if u don't want to upgrade your CPU, the 1050ti is the better option. as the bottleneck should be lower)

the 1080 is pretty good, however, it's going to be bottlenecked by the FX lineup

if u want to consider ryzen's line-up, this budget build can give u an upgrade path toward the Ryzen 7:
either R3 1200 / Athlon X4 950 if the budget is tight
8 GB RAM DDR4
SSD + HDD
1050ti
a decent budget PSU like Seasonic S12II / Corsair CXM (gray labels)
i saw that in JayzTwoCents that he manage to build the Athlon build with less than 500$

Solution
You will not be able to upgrade the CPU to anything substantially better. The motherboard is too old.

You will need a new motherboard, CPU and RAM.

Replacing the GPU with something considerably better will make the most noticeable improvement. Most games will still be held back by that old CPU. It came out five years ago. Five years ago it was mid range at best.
