My step dad recently had trouble with his computer and tried to clean it out with an air compressor after it started to stink. I took it apart to find one of the boards heatsinks off in the machine as well as a small retention hook that I have no idea what it goes to....does not appear that it goes to anything. I'm asking for help to see if this is recoverable or if we need to buy a new board? I think the heatsink is for the NB or SB but it could be the integrated graphics or is integrated graphics only on the CPU? I was thinking if it happens to be the graphics I can throw in my old AMD GPU. I would like some help to see what I can do next. I will try to include links and pictures of this. The computer still boots and works fine until watching shows online. Thanks!

The board in the Amazon link looks a little different physically, but going by that picture, the retention bar holds the heatsink in place. If you look diagonally up and to the left of the bared chip in your last picture, you can see an inverted U shaped metal clip set in black plastic. To the lower right of the chip, there's a bare space on the board with 2 small holes. I'm guessing it used to have a matching U clip that popped out. The retention bar hooks to both of them, probably with some bend to apply pressure.

Thanks for the response I will look for the other hook that came off, should I put new thermal paste on the heatsink?

If you've got some leftover paste lying around sure. If not, you'd need to decide if it's worth buying some since it still may not fix your problem. As far as I can tell that's the integrated graphics chip, Intel GMA 4500, pictures here:

So your original idea of throwing in an old GPU may be a simpler solution if the board will recognize it.

Just a little update I put in the AMD GPU but the case was to thin to accommodate the card. I ended up just leaving the side panel off and installed the AMD Catalyst driver it worked great. I then removed and uninstalled the AMD GPU and drivers and bought new solder and soldered on the U shape bracket back to the mobo and then used rubbing alcohol to remove the excess compound that was already there and put fresh compound on placed the heatsink back and reattached the retention arm and all is running well for the past few days! Thanks again for your input on this. :)
