I currently have two 290Xs and I do a lot of VR. I still get some frame drops with these GPUs. should I replace with the 1080TI or should I wait until the VOLTA, keeping in mind that I would probably only consider updating to the TI version which is still probably at least a year from release. Thanks.

If you do go for the 1080ti, you might want to look at the gigabyte auros wb waterforce which come factory fitted with the EK block as I notice you are on full custom water

Edit: Oops! Someone just pointed out to me that that is not a EK block but actually has better coverage and looks great.

Well a single gpu is always better than 2 gpu's. At this point in time there are very few games that properly support crossfire/sli and that give more than a 40% performance gain. Volta is for somewhere in the beginning in 2018 so if you can continue using the 290x's then wait for it. However try turning of crossfire and running games on just one quite often this can improve performance since forcing crossfire on a game that doesn't support it well usually results in worse performance.
