All except main drive suddenly dead??

So, I have pretty much given up hope on how to get stuff off of these drives (I mainly just want music), they don't spin or make any sound and they get hot.

My main thing is, How did this even happen?

Heres what went down, my motherboard literally fried itself (I saw flames). I immediately shut it off and removed the drives to check them. every single one of them worked when connected (I now feel so stupid for not backing them up when I had the chance). All i did was check to see if I could access their directories and that they were recognized and I could and they were. I then safely put them away, they were not thrown, bumped, or anything, they were put on a shelf that does not move or have any electronics/magnets near them. They were stacked but they were not really touching because they were in their plastic case bracked still so they had space (either way I hear that stacking them would not really do anything either)

I have 3 7200 RPM mechanicals and 2 SSD's (one of which is my main), all dead except the main OS SSD (500gb samsung SSD)

Fast forward to today, my board is being RMA'd right now. so, I go in to re-check the drives because I needed some quick data off and I just wanted to double check everything. I start with the Main drive a 500 GB Samsung EVO SSD, it works fine and I get some stuff off. I then go to each other drive and one by one, they don't spin and are completely dead. I try a different PC, I switch the cabled and ports and nothing. I then try another very old donated hard drive from my high school (computer repair class funnily enough). A drive that has literally been thrown around for years in a junk box (40 gb) and it boots/works just fine.

I just want to know how the hell this even happens. Also keep in mind that after my motherboard fried, I actually (stupid idea) tried a different PSU think that maybe it was just the PSU and it would all be fine (again very stupid idea I know) and I had only the main OS SSD connected, it started to spark again and was about to make flames but I pulled the plug. But again, the SSD connected and exposed to this electrical spark is the only one that is still surviving.

How? Also if there is anything I could possibly try, I'll try it, but I know there's not much hope now.

Solution
Maybe try your luck with an external USB enclosure and see if you have better luck with that. One of my old HDDs quit working in my PCs but still works fine in my Vantec NexStar 3 box.

Just want to clarify, you say "PCs" you've tried the drives on multiple PCs but they only work with the Vantec?? If so, thats really weird but really promising to hear. I will def. give it a shot. I forgot mention that I tried multiple connections with multiple PC's however, none were in proper enclosures and it was just connecting the SATA power and data off an open case.

But I will def. give it a shot even if its not 100%

Just want to make sure, is this what you got??

Ok I just bought a dock, which should be the same thing. I just need something for multiple hard drives and an enclosure is way too complicated for multiple hard drive swaps.

If that doesn't work I found a good place for PCB board replacement/cloning for cheap. I understand none of this is 100% but anything I can do I;m going to try, mainly just want my music.

The ones I have are ~10 years old, you'll have trouble finding the same model. They're USB2 only and likely discontinued for years by now.

My picky HDD is a 200GB Maxtor. Used to be in my P4, then moved it to my Core2 where it quit working for no apparent reason. That's when I moved it to my Next thinking I had a dead drive data recovery on my hands and it came back to life. Still doesn't want to work with my P4, Core2 or current i7 the last time I tried. If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say its SATA transceivers got damaged for some reason and it still works in the Vantec is because the SATA cable is only 1.5" long - too short for the damage to cause errors at SATA1 speeds.

Ok, that makes more sense then.

One last question. I ended up getting this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0099TX7O4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_6tXUzbXQFREVF

Instead of the vantec for convenience sake (4 Hard drives would be pretty annoying to test on an enclosure)

If my problem happens to be the same as yours would using a docking station like the one linked be any different than using the vantec?

Testing multiple drives with an enclosure isn't any more 'annoying' - you simply don't fully re-assemble the thing until you're done. Open the enclosure, plug the test drive in, turn the enclosure on, see what you get, turn it off, unplug the HDD, plug the next one, rinse and repeat.

Functionally, there shouldn't be much difference between a dock and enclosure. At most, the dock may have hot-plug support but I wouldn't bet on it.

The Dock probably isnt 'hot swap' so be sure to use the eject feature of the OS before removing the drive. And then I would unplug the USB cable before removing the drive and swappin in another one. USB docks usually like to have the drive installed before connecting the USB cable to the Pc.
