So recently ive been getting "Whea Uncorrectable Error" BSoD message when playing games. I would just random crash and get that message. I downloaded RealTemp and prime95 and when Idle my temps are around 40-45C then when I use Prime95 (Or go into any games like PUBG or League of Legends) My CPU temps go all the way to 100C. I went and got some new thermal paste today and applied it and it didnt seem to change temps at all. Do I need to get a new CPU fan? Anyone have any thing else I can try before I have to order one?

CPU: Intel I7 - 4790K
Fan: Stock Fan

Temperatures close to the thermal limit where the CPU may force the system to shutdown to save itself certainly don't help.

There are two reasons why thermal trip limit have been implemented in CPUs: to prevent the CPU from self-destructing when something goes wrong with cooling and also to (hopefully) shut the system down before excessive temperature causes processing errors that could corrupt data.

I had a similar problem with my C2D-E8400. The stock HSF worked fine for three years, then I cleaned my PC, probably nudged the HSF hard enough to break the TIM bond between the HSF and IHS, then temperatures were always 90+C under load with throttling aplenty. I tried changing the paste, no effect.

What I suspect is happening is that the HSF's plastic frame and/or pins permanently deform over time and after a few years, they simply cannot apply and hold the necessary contact pressure for good heat transfer after a HSF re-installation. On my i5-3470, the stock IHS was fine until a few weeks ago where I swapped it out for a salvaged i7-2600k and 212+.
