Nvme m.2 ssd ASRock Z97 Extreme 4

So i have just purchased a samsung 960 evo m.2 NVMe ssd and i cant get it to work, i can install windows on to it but it wont show up in the boot menu or in the bios anywhere. I have enabled the ahcp and disabled the csm while installing windows and that doesnt help, have also tried to clear secure boot keys and install them back once installing windows too but still nothing, am installing windows 10 pro from a usb drive media tool from ms, i have unplugged all my other hdd.
specs are below:

ASRock Z97 Extreme 4 motherboard
I5 4690k cpu
16gb corsair dominator platinum 1866mhz ram ddr3
Asus rog strix gtx 1080
Samsung 960 evo NVMe ssd
Nzxt x62 cpu cooler
Corsair hx750 psu

Make sure you've got the latest uefi from the official Asrock support.
Check asrock forums for a guide about installing windows on an nvme drive for your board - follow a guide from someone who's done it.
Make sure your nvme drive is going in the m2_1 slot.
On your uefi gui, have a bit of a look around - e.g. for z97 extreme 6, the m2_1 ssd appears on the advanced storage page *below* the sata listings (you need to scroll down).
When your selecting your boot options from the boot menu, you *may* need to select both the windows boot manager as boot option one and the new ssd (under 'hard drive bbs priorities) - I sometimes can't get boot loader options populating the 'boot option' field until I've selected the correct drive order.

So you can see the drive and install windows on it during the windows installation process but it does not show up in the bios? Well thats odd, the BIOS must be recognizing the drive if windows is, not sure why it wouldn't show up in the boot menu. Will it boot to windows using that drive after it is installed?

What BIOS version do you have?
I believe to boot from that drive, you need v2.40 or later.

Those boards were released before NVMe became a thing, so no default booting from that drive.

Windows USB/DVD Download Tool doesn’t help you prepare the bootable USB for UEFI PCs.
The USB/DVD Download Tool is used to prepare the bootable USB of Windows 10. After that use the free Rufus tool to prepare bootable UEFI Windows 10 USB drive.

It will instl windows then will restart the pc then will just go back into the usb installer as if it was going to install windows again so i restart and go into bios and the m.2 is no where too be found, everytime i reinstall windows on the m.2 after changing settings in the bios it does show that there are partitions on it in the instalation menu so it hs installed but just wont boot from it, i have read that m.2 nvme ssd's are mostly only supported by newer z170/z270 and skylake etc, i am upgrading too 7700k soon so should i just wait and see if if it will work properly with that?

I would recommend trying to get this working with your existing set up - if there's some problem and you wait until you buy your new rig, you've burned quite a bit of your warranty. (If you can, keep your existing windows hdd /ssd as is, ready to plug back in if you can set up the nvme drive - I would recommend installing with only that drive connected, for a few reasons.)

hi, did you solve this? I have the exact same symptoms.
Mobo. MSI z97 gaming 5
Ssd. Toshiba xg3 m.2 pcie
Windows installer sees it bios don’t so no boot. I have followed all the advice I could find to no avail.

If anyone is still having the same problem here is how to solve it:

Disable any fastboot function.
Shut down the pc, unplug power cord. Remove the m.2 drive, boot the pc, you should be in bios/"insert boot media" screen. Shut down the pc again, don't unplug power cord.
Now install the m.2 drive, and now you should be able to boot using the m.2 drive.

I don't know if the problem can be fixed by a firmware update, but this is what we have to deal with for now.....
