I already have a Samsung 960 Pro m.2 512GB for Boot drive and use as content creation.
I need a strong SSD that has long longevity with a warranty of 4-5 years+.
Around 900GB - 1.1TB.
I want MLC or SLC type SSD's and no TLC drives.
I will use this for all my games.
I could plough my money straight into a Samsung PRO Sata version, but want to know if there are any alternatives, and save some £££$$$€€€.
I have looked @TomsHardware and they recommend a TLC Samsung 850, but i dont want TLC, and want to keep the games on that drive for as long as possible. I will use 2x2TB 3.5"HDD in Raid 1 to back up the games and content creation on the Sata and M.2 Drives.
I know Corsair do MLC drives but they are only a few pounds cheaper than Samsung's PRO so looking at PCpartpicker; they dont have a button to differentiate the types of SSD's, a button i hope they will use in the future.

Best Regards

having read your link im not changing my mind, SSD's are a great way to store games, do you know how long it takes for BF1 to load a map up? SSD's only thanks. HDDs for me will only for backing up the M.2 and SSD's so that i have a failsafe method of storing files. I just prefer speed and consistency over cheaper and larger HDD's I still want either SLC or MLC drives.

Well good luck finding them, SLC's are not really available any more, and haven't been since 128Gb was 'large'. MLC is dying out too, there are few enough negatives with TLC that it is now the main contender.

Why MLC or SLC? is it the endurance, you are mostly reading so not a problem, and TLC you can do maybe a full disk write every 3 days and still not wear it out in 3-4 years, as a scratch disk that might pose an issue, as game storage it's not an issue.

SLC, TLC, MLC.....you will NOT see a difference in use or longevity.

All 3 of my main systems are SSD only, and I couldn't give a whit what the internal technicalities are. The eldest drive being 5.5 yrs old.
Whatever drive you buy today will become obsolete due to size long before it wears out from too many write cycles.

the Sandisk Extreme series offers 10 years warranty. I just want stable quality game space to continually add, i play alot of flight sims and constantly added more scenery, planes and realism. I want the fastest to access speeds & Sat6 speeds are fine, if i had the money id just buy the 2tb SSD M.2 960 Pro and that'd be the end of it.

I will just buy a Samsung 850 PRO 1tb, sometimes TomsHardware is good but sometimes people question the reason for your choice, all im after is a single question - followed by a simple answer, not Tlc blah blah, I think next time ill use LinusTechTips forum as you get a more direct answer. Done

The reasons questions were asked is because many times a person comes here with a teeny bit of information gleaned from their friends cousins barbers brother, who just passed his A+ cert.
"I need this for foo!"

'Well....maybe not, let's dig into the why'

But often, for a specific finely tuned requirement, there is only a single answer or part.
Which was recommended and which you've apparently chosen.

Your reasons for asking for what you want are dubious at best, so we are correct to challenge, if you want 'yes men', then fine, seek them out, if you want technically competent answers then questions need to be asked to understand your needs more deeply, as some of those needs may be misinformed.

The biggest issue with TLC is write endurance, which is why you want to avoid it right? For games storage this isn't an issue. It's wrote, and done. After that you are just reading. So there is no reason to avoid a TLC drive for games. Which is why we started asking the why because what you said didn't make sense to us. But if you want someone to just blindly answer your question you are welcome to go somewhere else. I'd rather give the right answer to the correct problem, not blindly answer something even when I know the person is asking the wrong question. It's up to you if you'd rather waste your money.

Warranties that long are pretty meaningless. If something goes wrong with your product it will do so in the first year of ownership. And 10 years down the line you'll most likely have that product replaced with something else by then. And warranties don't cover user error. They only cover manufacturer error. They're mainly a safeguard to prevent the manufacturer from selling you a bad product.

Aside from the value of combine M.2 of which i've put in a friends pc as he was after the 512gb pro m.2, i will use a 1TB Pro Samsung M.2, which is cheaper than the 512gb pro+ mcl 1tb. I will spend the rest on 2x WD gold or black drives in Raid 1
