Hi everyone,
I'm not very expereinced with PC's and have just inherited a gaming pc which I would like to run faster but I don't know what i should upgrade?
Intel Core i5 4440 @ 3.10GHz
ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. H81M-K (SOCKET 1150)
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (Gigabyte)
Many thanks :)

Solution
rather than upgrade, a new PC is preferable :)

but:
i think ur system can still handle the 1060 (though i don't think the performance difference worth buying a new GPU)
with a 1070, there ought to be a slight bottleneck (especially on CPU intensive games)
the thing is, that CPU is a locked one, so the extendability is pretty limited :)
if it's a K (+ u have a Z mobo), 1070 will do just fine :)

my suggestion? the first line :D

for a workstation, go for a better cpu and if you're programming or something processor heavy you should invest in an i7 processor, for a gaming rig a graphics card is usually the thing to upgrade, the system you have right now is very low bottleneck and can handle most games so an upgrade isn't really necessary, wait for some new parts like the 20-series or gen 8 processors instead ;)

One question that I have is whether the motherboard will be holding back the cpu and gps as I think its classified as a 'mini' motherboard as well as it being the cheapest component? would a better quality motherboard have any real tangible impact?

As long as the board has the expansion slots & feature set that you need then no , no performance improvement with a higher tier board.

Also its an old socket now ,while its still fairly easy to get haswell CPU's it is not easy to get haswell socket boards , they've been discontinued for 3 years now.

mini means it's suited for mini case, doesn't mean it's bad (it's referring to the size)
motherboard should have no effect on performance, rather, cheap ones just tend to have less feature (less USB port, etc)
