Hello,

It's been 3 years since my last upgrade and I think it's now time for the next. I have 2 PCs and one HTPC. What I always do when I upgrade my main PC is to transfer the parts from that PC to the second PC and from the second PC to the HTPC.

What I do in my main PC? About 3 hours general stuff such as Photoshop, Video Editing, Internet Browsing, etc.

I also spend around 4-5 hours on gaming. Games I play are mostly RPG, RTS but I also play Ghost Recon Wildlands, Battlefield 1, Star Wars Battlefront sometimes. I'm also planning to come back to World of Warcraft.

My current build is this:

Computer: R2-D2
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K (Haswell-DT Refresh, C0) 4000 MHz (40.00x100.0) @ 4197 MHz
Motherboard: ASUS MAXIMUS VII FORMULA
Chipset: Intel Z97
Memory: 16384 MBytes, 9-9-9-24
- 8192 MB PC12800 DDR3 SDRAM - GeIL CL10-10-10 D3-1600
- 8192 MB PC12800 DDR3 SDRAM - GeIL CL10-10-10 D3-1600
Graphics: Sapphire Radeon R9 290x Vapor-X
Monitor: BenQ - XL2720Z 27.0" 1920x1080 144Hz Monitor 4096 MB GDDR5 SDRAM
Drive: Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB, 244.2 GB, Serial ATA 6Gb/s @ 6Gb/s
Drive: Samsung SSD 850 EVO 1TB, 976.8 GB, Serial ATA 6Gb/s @ 6Gb/s
Drive: WDC WD1000DHTZ-04N21V0, 976.8 GB, Serial ATA 6Gb/s @ 6Gb/s
Drive: ST4000DM006-2G5107, 3907.0 GB, Serial ATA 6Gb/s @ 6Gb/s
Drive: ST4000DM006-2G5107, 3907.0 GB, Serial ATA 6Gb/s @ 6Gb/s
OS: Microsoft Windows 10 Professional (x64) Build 15063.608 (RS2)

Here are the links for the two options I'm thinking about it. Please note that there are optional items under CPU Cooler, RAM Memory and Cases. Everything that is showing as $0,00 it's because I have it already.

Option1

Option2

Both options are quite similar in costs so what I need help with is what will be the best option for my use based on my description above.

I'm really in the fence between the 5 cases and of course in the CPU. Please have in mind that my next upgrade will be 3-4 years from now.

My last question is. Based on my current build should I wait a little bit more before upgrade? For example, see how Ryzen evolves?

Thanks in advance,

Solution
Ryzen path all the way
since ur build also works as a workstation

the games u mentioned is pretty demanding, i suggest u upgrade the GPU to a 1080 perhaps (if u want the extra gaming performance now) or wait for Volta next year

as for the CPU, while 1800X is good, the Ryzen 2.0 might come out next year, so u might want to consider that instead :)

case: up to your preference and needs actually, so it's yours to decide :)

PS: nice monster rig btw, mine's only a measle i5 2400 + 1050ti :(

Thanks,

After reading several threads and comparisons about Ryzen vs i7 770K I also think Ryzen is the best option for my use. From what I read so far if I was building a PC for gaming only the i7 7700K would probably be the best option but it seems that there is still a lot of controversy.

I still prefer to wait an year more to get a new GPU and while I know that Nvidia 1080 TI is the best I can get I honestly prefer AMD and the reason is that I'm using Radeon for the last 10 years and never had an issue. Not to mention that I'm also looking for a new Monitor with Freesync.

You made me thinking now since you mentioned about Ryzen 2.0 next year which I didn't knew it will be better wait another year maybe?

Personally, the only components that need to be upgraded is your GPU and your preferred case.

You spend more time gaming than doing "general editing stuffs" to which your current i7-4790K would already suffice. I'd only consider getting the Ryzen 8C/16T CPUs if you are building a workstation PC (which, from your description, is more geared towards playing games). The "upgrade" from i7-4790K to i7-7700K is not worth it IMO (you'd spend a LOT of money for a new CPU, new MB, and new RAM sticks), as you already have a powerful CPU that can be paired with a more powerful GPU than what you currently have.

Since you have a 1080p/144Hz monitor, an ideal GPU to pair that with is the GTX 1080 (which is twice the graphics performance of your current R9 290X). So, I'd seriously consider that upgrade than the CPU/MB/RAM.

From a graphics editing point of view, a higher resolution monitor would be much better (more screen real estate and more mini-windows/toolbars to have in view). Considering that, you can also upgrade your monitor to a 1440p-resolution (which will also make gaming graphics more detailed). If fast-paced games are your cup of tea, then get a 144Hz+ refresh rate monitor. For such 1440p/144Hz+ monitor, it's best to pair that with a GTX 1080 Ti.

In both the above GPU suggestions, and as you are only using a single-GPU setup, you won't need 1000W Titanium/Platinum PSUs. Considering extreme OC'ing, a good quality ~600W (for the GTX 1080 rig) or a good quality ~700W (for the GTX 1080 Ti rig) would be more than enough. Consider the SuperNova G2 series to save on costs.

So basically upgrade the Monitor and the GPU. The GTX 1080 Ti will be around $750 and a good Monitor will cost around $600. G-Sync monitors are very expensive so I will probably skip those. It's been quite some time that I'm thinking on get a 1440p monitor although I still couldn't find anything that I really like it. Mostly because in a 27" Monitor at 1440p the size of the fonts are very small meaning that I need to find a 30"or 32". Last but not least I don't like curve monitors very much but this is of course my personal preference.

they already working on it, more updates about it will come next year

while raisonjohn is true about how ur rig is still very capable, the Ryzen would increase ur performance (i mean, it's 8c/16t, it'll do u good, especially in productivity [editing, rendering, etc], will also benefits u too if u consider on doing some streaming) also allows u to futureproof the upcoming recommendation requirement (since the 4 core trends has already starts shifting) newer gen games which also starting to utilize more available threads will also be improved with the CPU upgrade

the best GPU in the consumer market is 1080ti (meant for either 1440p@144 / 4k@60), but u can always opt for 1080 since u're playing on 1080@144 anyway :) or since u're planning this for next year, u can always wait for Volta :)

i do agree with what raisonjohn said about the PSU, for a high quality, u won't need the 1000w unless u're using Vega 64 which is a eletricity-eater (trust me, the power consumption is monstrous) / u're doing SLI / Xfire, 750w / 850w is more than enough

I think I'm almost convinced to buy a new GPU and let the rest of the PC upgrade for the next year. After a quick (not deep) research I end up with the following cards. My main concern is the noise level and most of the reviews I read says that EVGA it's the most silent.

EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti SC Black Edition GAMING

EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti SC2 GAMING

EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti FTW3 GAMING
https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=11G-P4-6696-KR

At the bottom of the following page there is a comparison between the three.

FTW is EVGA's best line-up (think of it as MSI's Gaming X / ASUS Strix / Galax HoF)
i suggest u go with the FTW edition :)

I wonder if a 1070 will not be good enough for my needs. It will be good in a 1440p monitor? The reason I'm asking is more because it's half of the price and since Pascal is at the end of their life with Volta coming next year maybe it's good to save some money right now.

But the 1070 will be MUCH better than my current R9 290X?

That's the comparison
But yes, 1070 will be good enough for 1440p@60fps, however with the pricing right now, u can spend a few more $ and get a 1080 instead (since most 1070 these days are priced from 400-500$, if u find a good rebate, do take 1070 instead as it's will be enough for ur needs)
